High Guys,
Sorry for the untechnical terminology here I just wanted to check what this issue may be. My RDS shock seems to have a fault as the rod part that you can see under the rubber cap inside the boot as pushed up really high and knocked the parcel shelf side support off!
When driving it has a constant rattle when going over bumps from what I think is the washer and constantly sits very high, going even higher when driving.
I thought maybe the susspension spring has gone but cannot really look untill the weekend. Anyone know what this is more than likely? The shocks were replaced about 3 years ago. What would cause the shaft to push constantly high?
Thanks

I think from memory they have a circlip at the top, sounds like that is broken.
Whatever happens park it up for now.
-
Sounds like your top mount has failed mate. By the sounds of it your rod has pushed its way throught the top mount. So you will be just sitting on the coil spring with no damping. The rattle is probably the the rod flapping about. Needs sorting ASAP and I wouldn't drive it like that
-
Yeah its defo the circlip thats broke, same thing happened to me a while back.
-
Bummer! Easy job to fix? Will I have to remove the shock etc?
What number on this diagram would the circlip be?

17 on your first picture
&
21 on this new picture...........
What do i win??.......
-
And yes you have to take the shock absorber off the car,not hard job though if everything goes to plan.
-
So the entire weight of the car bears down on these circlips?
Can I purchase this circlip anywhere online?
Tha part number appears to be: 8D0 512 097. I found VW Heritage sells them as snap rings:

Would this be suitable?

So does all rear shocks have these? Or is it just the ones he has? Didn't see a circlip when removing my shocks and putting my coilys on or is this a diferant shock?
-
Yep number 21 mate, happened to me.
Bought some boge shocks....uncle fitted them (hes a hgv mechanic) he couldn't understand what was going on......then he realised when comparing them to the old shocks.
You have to order them seperatly apparently, i took my car to an ATS kind of place, they put them on for me....and my cars rear sits lower to the ground now....feck knows what they did, i just got really pissed off with it all. You order shocks, i expect all the bleeding parts to be included!!!!!
-
I think coil overs work different...but im no expert :S
-
only slightly different where the top cap has a recessed seat for the shock leg to stop it going through.....
-
Ah right so coilys don't need the circlip then?
That's why I assumed his top mount had failed as I have alway just taken off standered setup and bunged coilys on :rolleyes:My bad
-
nope coilies dont have the circlip......
-
Does the circlip just slip over the top? If so do you have yours spare stainesy from your old ones?
Cheers
-
Sorry fella iv sold my old suspension now mate. If you would have asked yesterday I would have had it for you mate.
-
OK so I ordered the cirlip but wow they look small. Before dismantling the shocks just wanted to check it isnt something more serious:

The bit I am holding in the second pic seems to have corroded around the middle circumference.
Do I just remove the shock from car, slide new circlip over top and refit?
-
Can anyone tell me do i need to fully remove the shock or will jacking alone give enough clearance to slip the circlip on?
-
Just try jacking it up and find out mate. Don't jack the rear up on the beam tho as if you do it on the frame instead you will get more swing down of the beam. If you stick the rear on axle stands ur not on the beam you may have a chance as beam will swing down lower.
