Anyone used it?
I'm putting my T25 camper van back on the road and I'm planning on painting it with a roller!

Anyone tried this method of painting? I've got the paint already so I'm going for it....
-
Yes i have seen lots of cars done with it and I laughed at first but they look really good!!
-
Wow! would be very interested to actually see the finish in the flesh though.
-
Here are a few cars done with it

I'm actually looking forward to doing it!! I'm even going for a colour change :)
I did a bit of sanding and filling after work today, the beauty of it is that you don't have to do much masking and can do it as and when you please... The paint cost me £35 delivered and it doesn't need primer!
"The paint you need is Rust-oleum Combicolor. It's an UV resistent, rust-inhibiting paint that will flex without cracking and you can actually apply it with a roller to steel and/or glass fibre - no primer needed. "
Everywhere I have looked, the results look decent...

And a cheeky set of new wheels... Need to get extended rear studs as the original ones are a little short.
Still got a bit to do, I can't decide on the roof colour, I'm torn between black or white, suggestions welcome!
-
It looks better than I thought it would, good effort.
I personally would leave the roof white, I think black would clash with the light blue.
You could always paint brush the pic on your computer to get an idea though
-
Can you get some close ups!? I'm really considering doing this to mine. What needs doing with regard to the prep? Will it cover/fill scuffs and stuff? Does look pretty decent from afar though.
-
Finish has a slight orange peel, although you can flat it down for a mirror finish. Personally I'm not gonna bother for now as it looks fine and its transformed the van.
Before you paint, it has to be flat, I first used a DA with 80 grit on the bottom half as it had been brush painted before, then filled any dents etc. Then 320 on the DA everywhere. Then panel wipe then roll the paint on. No need for primer! Full instructions are on the link I put on the first page...
Its not a quick job, I reckon I have put in at least 25 hours so far, and thats mostly with a high power air DA, I still have the drivers door and front to do, although these bits have nearly all been 80'd and filled so its nearly there. I'm hoping to have it all finished tomorrow.....
-
Looks spot on! Yeah I would have expected a bit of orange peel. I would have said I don't have a DA for the prep so it'd take forever, but when your only paying £35 for paint, u could afford to buy one!
I do have a rotary and although I'd still class myself a novice, I kinda know what I'm doing now so I reckon I could wet sand and flat the orange peel back to a reasonable standard.
How much paint did you need for the whole van? And was the roller and tray just the standard mini gloss pack you get from B&Q for £1.99 type thing?
-
Thanks! I am well pleased with the results so far.
I might wet and dry it eventually, but not really bothered for now.. It looks plenty good enough..
Any gloss rollers (high density foam) will do, I have just been throwing the trays and rollers away when I have finished with them, they were about a fiver for a pack of five rollers and the trays are about 90p each from Wilko's. I also bought a pack of foam paint brushes.
I bought a 2.5L tin of paint, two thirds of the van has had one coat, I reckon there's just under 2L of paint left. You thin the paint with about 10% white spirit. Its amazing how far it goes.
Some people put two or three coats on, sanding between coats. I have got so much paint left that I am gonna leave it as is and see how it goes, its easy enough to do a bit more at a time (or repair), and there are so many seams to blend into on the T25 that it would be really easy to do.
You definitely need two people when painting, one to paint, one to follow looking for runs, as long as you get it on even it flats itself. The painting is the easy bit, its the prep work that takes the most time...
Is it a T25 your planning on doing?
-
No my Corrado!
Its the prep I'm afraid of..... I doubt it will be for a while anyway, its my daily atm til the missus is driving again. Its not gonna make much difference even if I cock it up to what the car is worth anyway tbh, so may as well give it a go.

There's no reason why not, most of the work I have had to do is because the van was full of dents and had been hand painted badly in the past, so I have had to get that flat before painting.

thank fook for this thread,

Cheers, still need to paint the roof and need to Mot it, had to weld the door steps but that's all done now so pretty much ready...

Its alot of time and effort, I wouldn't entertain it without a DA to be honest, its still alot of time and effort but much easier!!!
-
Paint bought last night
How would a DA benefit the job?

What you painting and what colour?
A DA Sander saves sanding by hand... Depends how much bodywork your doing really, my van had been hand painted and the finish was awful so needed alot of prep work.
-
DA only really for initial prep inbetween coats do it by hand or you could find yourself taking a lot of paint off ! also wet sand as much as you can as it doesn't clog the paper and so it lasts longer
-
Agreed, although the rustoleum paint is pretty forgiving, I useds 80 grit on the hand painted bottom half, then 240 everywhere then painted...
-
interesting stuff. not a bad finish at all to be fair.
-
It can be flatted down for a mirror finish too, but you need a few coats on to do that....
-
So after the arrival of this..
And after reading this thread..
http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html
The can says to use acetone, but the folks on the moparts forum had problems with the paint flashing too fast using it as a thinning medium. Mineral spirits seemed to work just fine for me and, when thinned, the paint self-leveled to completely smooth after a few minutes.
Judging by the fact, they are in baking hot America, think using Acetone itself would help due to our temperatures not being so warm?
-
Yeah I read that thread before I did mine too!!!
I used white spirit to thin down, about 10%, it did take an age to go off but turned out ok, you don't have long to work the paint as it is so you wouldn't want it to go off too quickly....
-
Fair do's, so goes tacky reasonably quick, but takes ages to fully cure?
-
Yeah exactly, you can only pass over it so many times with the roller, you soon get a feel for it though.
Best advice I can give you when painting is to have a second person following you and pointing out any runs and bits you've missed so you can quickly go back over them.
-
Yeah, will get a spotter, how did you do door shuts etc, foam brush, how did that end up?
-
Foam brush finish is the same really, you can do 95% of it with the roller. What I did was do the tricky bits with the foam brush, then run the roller over where I could get to, turned out fine...
Make sure that you really really saturate the roller before you start painting, if not you will get air bubbles, you can get them out by running the roller over again with no pressure atall on it but its a hassle that can be avoided if the roller is saturated...
