Yup I am as stupid as I sound, I think I'm going to put myself up for a Darwin award.
Was bleeding the front brakes with my dads help yesterday and had both front wheels off the ground. When I put the wheels back on again I finger tightened the nuts. Brought the car back down then bled the slave cylinder. Packed up and assumed my dad tightened the wheels up, and he assumed I did.
Drove down M1, M25, M4 back to my place. Started hearing a noise while in traffic in south london. Pulled over and had a check but couldn't find anything. Drove slowly for a while and the noise was getting worse so decided to pull over when I got a chance but before I could wheel fell off and I slid about 3 metres on the front left disc!
So now I have a ruined disc, threads in some of the hub holes rounded and front wing bent!
I now need a new hub, can I replace just the hub or does the bearing need to be changed as well?
-
that is grim! sorry to hear that mate!
-
change the lot. you could get a used hub from the scrappy with disc. So easily done that wheel bolt thing. check and double check.
-
oooops
-
I was thinking about changing the whole hub but I wasn't too sure if the bearing in a second hand hub would be in good nic
-
if you get a second hand hub change the bearing rather than fit it an find its f**ked
-
If I buy a second hand hub housing only to replace the bearing on that shouldn't I just change the bearing in the hub housing that's currently on the car? Seems like an unnecessary expense. I may be reading your response wrong though
-
well if youve threaded some of the hub holes and can get a hub from a scrappy going to be easier to replace the hub than go through the trouble of having to retap the hub ect.
ide just replace it and put new bearings in.
changed my alloys over yday so i shall be checking my wheel nuts when i get out of work tonight
-
Sorry I think I'm being dense here but it seems like it would be more expensive to buy a new hub housing.
Option 1: Keep my hub housing and replace hub + bearing. Cost = new hub + new bearing
Option 2: Buy new hub housing and possibly replace bearing. Cost = 2nd hand hub housing + hub + bearing.
From what I have gathered you have to replace the hub http://www.eurocarparts.com/images/products/600x600/629440720.jpg (http://www.eurocarparts.com/images/products/600x600/629440720.jpg) and the bearings together.
Thanks for your help

Go to the scrappy, fit a new hub, if the bearing is noisy then change it. It doesn't take long to change a hub at all so I'd at least try it first.
-
Sounds like you were lucky...esp if you were driving on the M25 and it didn't happen then!
-
pics or it didn't happen!
-
Haha I was waiting for someone to say that. I didn't take any pics of the actual incident since my phone battery was low and I needed it while waiting for the mobile mechanic.
Will take a pic of the wing when I get home
-
just get your second hand hub and bearing. The front bearings are pretty strong on these and you would be able to feel if it was buggered before you buy it.

FAIL!
Happend to my mate a few years back in a saxo. The chimp that sold him the car didnt put spacers on the wheels, about 3 weeks of driving the car about there was a really dodgy rattling noise, couldnt see anything obvious so drove home slow and all of a sudden the wheel popped off and flew down the road just missing a parked car and he was left sliding into the kerb! Lucky i was behind him!!
-
Sorry to hear that, happened to me a few years back on my Mk3 Golf, I put new wheels on and didnt (re-check) the bolts after 400 miles my passenger wheel came off but I was extremely lucky.
-
happened to a guy over her in his Saff Cos too, except he was going at a fair pace when the wheel came off putting him into a barrier. Walked away though, then bought himself a newer Cos with the payout from the garage that didn't do the bolts up properly
