Title: I fecked my clutch cable....
Post by: Bandit127 on 13 May 2012, 18:36
I was going to do the upgrade to the manual adjustment cable next payday but the current one was getting very graunchy so I though I had better check it today. I took it off and checked it. No fraying so that was good. I thought I would grease it up so I worked a load of spray grease in using the cup at the pedal end of the cable.

All good (I thought). Put the cable back on and checked the pedal. Hmmm - a bit firm... Put the clocks back in and reconnected the battery so I could fire it up. Arse - the clutch is fully engaged! I can select first gear with no foot on the pedal....

I think I must have forgotten to engage the while strap thing when it took it off. Auto adjusting cable FAIL!

It needed a new one anyway though - so I am off to the VW dealer in the morning (luckily just a mile walk away).

Please can someone check the part number for me (I got it from this post on another forum http://www.clubgti.com/FORUM/showthread.php?p=1876120 (http://www.clubgti.com/FORUM/showthread.php?p=1876120)).

192 721 335G - is that right for a manual cable for a GTi 8V?

TIA

You can reset it if you wiggle it enough. Did mine the other day

An update...

Thanks Chris. I couldn't get it to adjust by wiggling it.

So I took it off and went through the reset procedure here:
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=186841.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=186841.0)
It became obvious at that point where the graunchy feeling was coming from - the adjuster itself felt horrible. I reset it anyway and put it back on. Despite a few hundred pumps on the pedal it wouldn't take up the slack so I think the adjuster is shot.

Eurocarparts don't do a manual adjust cable (according to the guy on the phone) and he didn't have the auto one in stock.

VW have discontinued the manual cable (part number 192 721 335G). However, they can get a new auto adjuster in for lunchtime today - £38 + VAT so I will go with that.

Just sitting and waiting for it to arrive now.

EDIT - New cable now fitted and working. Woo hoo! Mobile again (http://www.bandit127.com/oof_stuff/images/thumbs-up.gif)
