Title: First MPG return from the diesel .... OUCH!
Post by: NotMyName on 13 May 2012, 18:34
We were expecting it to be a bad one. Bought it middle of last month. It's not been insured for road use by my brother, so he who's 19 was just razzing it up & down the private land it's parked on. I took it out for a spin as i thought the 'stat wasn't working properly. Turned out it was, but while out he said take it on the motorway. Had a spirited drive on there to see how it fared. Had a sensible drive last Monday. After this was fuel filter replacement & more up & down on the private land.

All in all 44 miles were covered.

Fuelled up today as my brother is insured as of tomorrow for it & wants an accurate MPG figure to see what he's getting from day-to-day use.

So today's figure ......... 28MPG!! OUCH!!

Knew it would be low but didn't think it'd be THAT low. 1.9 TDI. PD apparently. 100bhp.

Looks like these engines like to sup if you hammer them. I remember back in the day when i owned a Citroen ZX 1.9D & it didn't matter how hard i drove it, it always returned good figures.

I'd say there is something wrong with it. I struggle to get below 40 even when booting it!

are you getting that figure off the computer ??  if so its probably giving you an average based on average revs, speed etc and not on actual fguel used compared to miles done .  AS I imagine he was leathering it a bit

Nope.

Miles divided by litres multiplied by 4.544 is how i've always worked it out.

Have thrown the receipt now so can't give you the exact figures, but it worked out 28 something. Roughly 44 miles covered. 7.something (let's say 7 & half) litres put in.

My wagons a 100bhp pd its been remapped aswell and if I drive it very hard it usually goes to about 32-35mpg.If I drive it steady it goes upto about 43-45mpg round town.On a run doing about 80MPH I usually get about 47-50mpg I always reset the trip computer settings 1 and 2 on most jorneys aswell. My dads got a 2.0tdi mk5 140bhp and thats far better than his all mk4 130bhp and my own car the PDs are decent enough but they do drink it a little if you boot it like most cars do.

You reminded me of something...

IT was flashing "service" so i followed the guide on how to reset it, which turned the trip to 0, but IIRC it then brought the numbers back to what they were, so now i'm not sure whether the miles (40 or so) that i calculated were true, or whether they were missing about 5-10 mile. If i had to bet on it i'd say they were true - which means the 28mpg remains.

Seems low-ish.  On a spirited run over 50 miles in my 150 that'll give me about 30-34

Mines a 110 GT TDi and even when I'm booting it (very rare) I don't drop below 40mpg
