Title: Wobbly speedo needle
Post by: j_s on 07 June 2005, 15:49
Hi guys

I've got a wobbly speedo needle when accelerating or in but idle less so. It's ok when maintaining a speed though.

What do I need to do to fix this?

It's an 88 8v.

Thanks guys :)

That's exactly what mine was doing just before the speedo stopped altogether.

And what did you do to fix it? :D

I had this on one of my old old Mk1 Fiestas but it kept working, I was 17 then and didn't give a damn but now I want it all working as it should :)

had same problem, changed speedo cable and drive in the gearbox works as it should now

would advise getting genuine VAG speedo cable as I originally was going to get one from Euro Car Parts, the grommets on the ECP as solid plastic and it's practically impossible to fit the grommets

Thanks guys, what am I looking at with changing the cable, dash off etc?

Hockeylad, you said you changed the speedo cable but what do you mean by drive in the gearbox?

I rerouted my cable to under the rain tray which helped, then I cut off the damaged sections of outer sheathing and cleaned out bits of it that were trapped in the gaps.  Then I sprayed WD40 down the hgaps, dried off the excess and taped over the holes in the sheathing with Duck tape.  After a day or so of driving the WD40 worked its way thru the cable and the problem was completely solved, cheaper than a new cable thats for sure :)

Genuine cables are beginning to become obselete now too. My one was the last one for my cars chassis code.

this link is for changing instrument cluster bulbs in principle it is exactly the same for changing speedo cable, and I would strongly recommend changing dash bulbs as well I didn't and soon after had to remove cluster again. A right pain in the ar5e!! you can get bulbs and holders from VAG if you get the white bulb holders you get a 2W bulb compaired to 1.2W which makes a big difference.

good luck with it

Thanks mate

I'll hunt down a VAG speedo cable from somewhere, there is a VW specialist almost opposite my office and their info states they have a lot of stock for all ages of VW so worth a try. At the same time i'll sort out the white bulb holders.

Thanks very much for everyone's help and i'll update you once i've started work on it.

Got new tyres to sort out first, there's a whole other can of worms ;)
I'm opting for Vredestein (I think that's how you spell it)

I forgot to ask, is there a part number for the white bulb holders as they may look at me blankly when I ask :)
