Hi All,
Just wondered if a common fault?
My MK3 GTi 8v has developed a very sloppy gear stick this morning? haven't looked at it yet, just trying to get a heads up on it? I can still get all the gears at the mo, but when engaged the stick has loads more movement than normal...
Anyone else had the same issue?

Buishes in the linkage, get a repair kit of ebay. Shouild sort it

As above I did this and at the same time installed the shorter selector from a corrado it's about an inch an a half shorter makes it feel mouth more direct also has the feeling I've shortening the throw of the change as the std one I found was a bit long.. , it's lovely now, by it's nature the cable selector will have some slop in the but not much, it's certainly not like the mk2 which feels like loading a rifle

That's y my mk2 had the mk3 wieghted rod, made it much nicer.

I had this happen, it was the 'golf ball' on the gearshift relay shaft.
It breaks down and eventually falls apart leaving you with massive play in the shifter.
You can replace the plastic part without having to take the full part out; it's tricky but doable.

I had this happen, it was the 'golf ball' on the gearshift relay shaft.
It breaks down and eventually falls apart leaving you with massive play in the shifter.
You can replace the plastic part without having to take the full part out; it's tricky but doable.

having looked at it under the bonnet it does indeed look like the relay shaft ball has significantly reduced in size....trying to upload image...

my gears have gone strange its as if its hard to get in to gear. it moves fine but just the last little bit a bit sticky.

That's the thing, yours has completely fell off, probably broke up.
If you get the part above, you can pull off the 'ball' and push it onto the one on the car (saves a lot of effort).
You have to remove the nut at the top, then wiggle the gear lever in the car to get access.
You won't believe how nice the gear changes will feel after you change it!

ah yes, thanks for putting pic up as well... i have already taken it apart and fitted a aluminuim fitting to get me going, now quite stiff change... so yes will order proper thing.

update, so got the new relay shaft from veedubmachine, but they they were very poor at getting back to me via ebay...ended up ordering direct from their webite, which arrived quickly and had good communication.
When i come to fit the part, i decided to change the whole shaft, rather than just the ball. I then realised the shaft was supported via a plastic bush top and bottom, of which the bottom one had siezed to the shaft. I got one of these turned up at work, and then fitted that with the new shaft, the top plastic bush was ok.
So in summary veedubmachine are good, and if fitting a relay shaft complete be ready to replace the plastic bushes that support it.
Gear shift is slick now, thanks for all the advise. :smiley:
