Title: Gearbox Problems
Post by: carloscdt on 01 October 2003, 09:50
I cannot engage 5th gear on
my 1987 Mk11 8v GTI 160,000 miles.

Is this major gearbox or linkage problem.

Any advice would be great.

You may have a problem with the linkage adjustment. Check that first and let us know how you get on:-

Had a look last night and found
a partly broken plastic linkage.

Think this will be a dealer part only?

To be honest you'll be better off going to the dealer anyway. Their prices are more reasonable nowdays and you know you'll be getting oem parts.
Just out of interest, if I post a breakdown of the linkage parts can you tell us which bit it is?

Thats described as the 'selector rod' Pt no: 191 711 595 A
I may have one, but for what it'll cost I would imagine you'd be better off going to VW.
