I decided to take a week of my hard earned leave and dedicate it to refurbin my 17” Ronals which I snapped up for £100 (inc tyres) a few months ago. This is by no means a “How to” it’s a more “How I did it” thread.
So to start off I got myself some spray… now I didn’t know what sort to go for, so in the end I decided I would go budget and got these
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0175.jpg)
2 Primer, 3 Paint, 2 Lacquer all 500ml.
You could go for a more expensive paint etc but I though I would give these budget ones a go because I got all of them for £18!!
Next was sand paper/Wet n dry. I initially bought a range of grits from 60 up to 1200 (get more 60-120 grits I used these most)
For the insides of the wheels I got this bad boy (http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0188.jpg)
It would have taken me an age to do the insides of the wheels by hand as they were heavily corroded. (Below)
So I cracked on with the sanding and after a good 1-1/2 – 2 hours on each wheel I was ready for the primer, now as you can see by the pictures I’m not looking for a ‘perfect finish’, just something decent that didn’t take me ages….
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0178.jpg) (http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0189.jpg)
Next I had the tyres whipped off and gave it a good sanding round where the tyres sit as I think I had a couple of slow punctures from the rim (the smoother you can get it the better).
So onto the first coat of primer, I warmed the cans up in the warm water and cracked on with the first coat
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0196.jpg)
Then the second coat
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0200.jpg)
Then 2 coats of primer on the fronts
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0202.jpg) (http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0201.jpg)
Now up close you can see where I’ve been a bit lazy and not flattened off the edges on some of my sanding, so out came the wet and dry… again.
(http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0203.jpg) (http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab312/robbie6549/IMG_0204.jpg)
Wheels are all sanded and re-primed, 2 coats in total and I JUST had enough, I’m happy with 2 coats, don’t think a 3rd would make any difference but you’ll defiantly need another can if you intend on doing 3 coats.
I set my heater up in the garage and let the primer harden for around 45 min, then I took some 1000 grit wet n dry to it just to smooth the finish a little, I didn’t go mad as it would just fetch the primer off but a general rub down didn’t do it any harm. I used lots of water, gives you a nice smooth finish. I have taken the primer back to the metal in some areas, but im sure all will be good once i get my paint on
Now for the paint.. as said I’ve got 3 tins of it so I intend to do at least 3 coats, or as many as I can until it runs out.
Update to follow once I’ve got some paint on em!

looking good mate

Looking good, be good to see the final finish once there done...

Got them painted yesterday afternoon, did have to patch them up along the way due to my lazy preping but im happy with the result...

The result is by no means perfect, however if i would have spent longer prepping it would have been near perfect.
Now for the Lacquer... the paint can actually says not to lacquer!? however im guna ignor that and crack on

Good work!

They look pretty good man

Got them finished off on Friday, just giving them a week in the garage before getting the tyres fitted on Saturday. Will get some pics up then
The only thing im stuck with is centre caps :undecided: theyre a slightly different colour, dont know if they'll stand out really bad, so just going to stick them on and see where to go from there.

Forgot to add, i used a filler called Chemical Metal, awsome stuff, only takes about 20min to set. Cant reccomend it enough

Nice job mate. Not too sad at all! How much did it cost you all together, paper and all the spray etc. How long did it take you as well?

Cheers mate. Rounded up/down:
Paint/Primer/Lacquer - £20
Paper - £10
Tyres Removed - £10
Tyres put back on and new valves fitted - £40
Poor Boys Wheel Sealant - £10
So you could say nearly £100 all together.
I spent 3 full days all together but that involved a bit of watching paint dry a round of golf and a cheeky couple of pints down the local on completion
They say prep is everything.... well it is! If i would have spent an extra hour on each wheel then results would have been much better and same again if i would have spent 2 hours extra. It all depends how much time you have and what standard of finish you want.
I'll have pictures uploaded next weekend of the finished wheels on the car, i should have got them on this week but the chimp in the tyre fitting place chipped one of the alloys  , there guna "sort it" they said so ill have to wait until i get home on Friday to get them fitted!

I would have added some high build primer but not bad at all.

High Build Primer?
-
Yeah, high build primer reduces the need to sand as many of your edges down. Kind of like a spray primer/filler.
I'm half way through refurbing a set of montreal 2's - they were in a hideous condition and now are looking exceedingly nice!
The key thing for refurbs if you're doing them by hand is - estimate roughly how much time you want to take - then multiply it by 4. I have literally given 1 week per wheel as a time marker for cleaning up, getting the rot out of the wheels, sanding down, sanding AGAIN, sanding... AGAIN!, etch primer, sanding, etch primer again, then standard primer, sanding again, then more standard primer, sanding again, then 3 coats of paint (with wet and dry between each coat), then 3 coats of lacquer with wet and dry between each coat and then polish/sealing wax.

Ahhh, well seems a couple of things i could have done better.
As said previously, the wheels would have benefited from at least another hours prepping time each.
Secondly the Lacquer.... i didnt wet and dry between coats (or before i put it on) and now that the local sponge monkey has washed my car its taken patches of the lacquer off the wheels... not an issue spraying some more on, but one to watch for!

HAHA Kerbed one of them yesterday... tw*t!!!
Dont bother refurbin fu*kin waste of time!!!
