Title: Windscreen replacement cost?
Post by: WhiteGolfMK3 on 09 May 2012, 17:54
Somehow I managed to crack all the corner of my windscreen today! Will it pass an MOT? How much for a replacement? Its an mk3.

Thanks in advance :)

You might have cover from your insurance for windscreen repair, you should look at your policy documents for further info. I had mine done a few weeks ago, cost me 75 pounds excess.
However if you don't have cover expect to pay around 300 pounds.

call around the windscreen places as I know people have paid under £150 for a tinted mk3 screen fitted

(b.t.w the glass places charge my work £560 for the same screen fitted!!)

You should be OK for an MOT pass if it's in the corner.  Read S.8.3

http://mottesters.co.uk/files/special%20notices/MOT%20Inspection%20Manual.pdf

To summarise.  Zone A is the important test area.  Then the swept area of the wiper blades is a secondary consideration.

REASON FOR REJECTION.

1. In Zone ‘A’:

a. damage not contained within a 10mm
diameter circle, or
b. a windscreen sticker or other obstruction
encroaching more than 10mm
c. a combination of minor damage areas
which seriously restricts the driver’s view

In the remainder of the swept area:

d. damage not contained within a 40mm
diameter circle, or
e. a windscreen sticker or other obstruction
encroaching more than 40mm
f. a temporary windscreen fitted.

Ok thanks, hopefully mine will come up as an advisory also! I'm going down to a local garage to ask them a bit later and see what they say.

RING ROUND!

I got my one done for £80.

No insurance, straight screen swap and same quality screen.

I've got a number of a small mobile fitting company somewhere, I'll try to find it for you, they have a few fitters in different places to cover the whole country, a tinted mk3 screen fitted is £120, less if you let them choose when to come and fit it as they will tie it in with other jobs in the area, I'll have a look for it later today see if I can find it, I need mine replacing so I hope I can find it.

boycotte the big names and support the smaller firms (and they are cheaper)
