Title: ED35 Black door mirror housings?
Post by: JoeGTI on 09 May 2012, 10:22
Hi guys,
Here in Ireland, VW have just launched a Golf "Match" which has the R and Ed35 black door mirror housings

I'm wondering does anyone know if the mirror housings are painted black or are they a non-painted gloss black plastic? And if so, are they available to buy from main dealers? I'm thinking they might look well with my Candy white...!

They are painted black and available to buy pre-painted from the dealers.

Personally I would vinyl wrap your original ones for a fraction of the cost.

OK, thanks... would be handy if that wasn't the case. Ah well !

If what wasn't the case?

I meant it would be easier (hassle free) if the mirror caps were available pre-painted or as I had thought they were - in gloss black plastic. I wouldn't trust my DIY skills to wrap the existing ones and I don't know of anyone locally that does it. I'll look into it though at some point.

I was lucky enough to pick up a set from a guy who'd taken his off his Golf R.

I agree though, get them wrapped.

You could always Plastidip them, first a couple layers of the (matt/satin) black and then a few layers of clear coat, and then peel off the overspray

I said they were available pre-painted in my first post.

I was suggesting having a go at wrapping yourself as an initial option. Vinyl is so cheap that you could buy enough to have 2 or 3 goes at it. And if you really mess it up, you will only have spent a few quid. That has to be worth a go as I wouldn't have thought you would see much change from £100 for pre-painted caps.

Oh, sorry mate, mis read your 1st post! I'll check the cost of them at the dealers and go from there.

I've been in touch with my dealer who has said the following regarding costs...

Price for the mirror caps is £31.02 each Inc VAT and labour cost for
spraying is £132.00 Inc VAT (both caps)

I know it's expensive just for some covers but I'm quite tempted

Ah, so when the dealers say they are available "painted", what they really mean is that they get them primed ready for painting from VW and then they paint them afterwards themselves (or they send them to a local body shop to do it!)

Are the "R" mirrors painted in the same flat black (non metallic) as a regular non-metallic black Golf I wonder ?

Yes your correct they come primed and then the dealer paints'em, and yes again I think the R covers are painted in the way as the ED35's..

Ive seen somewhere on here that they're £30 each inc VAT. Matching some black to my wheels from local paint shop and getting a friend who sprays to do it for a drink. I was tempted to just paint origionals as I dont think i'll be chanching back
