Hey guys n Girls, Whats all this Decat exhaust i hear about lol.
looking to get a nice purring noise on my car nothing chanvvy and to loud but iv heard a decat exhaust can do this and gain a few bhp at the same time. is this correct? if so how much am i looking at?
iv been looking in to getting a twin back box but all i can find is universal ones and i heard bad things about these cheap ones on ebay so not sure if i wanna risk that.

A decatted exhaust is when you remove the catalytic converter from the exhaust system.
Supposedly allows exhaust gases to flow more freely and can change the exhaust note, however, car will probably not pass MOT without one as its emissions will be much higher.

A decat has its ups and downs....
Ups: Nice sound, Few pops and bangs etc etc
Downs: Wont pass MOT, IMO there is no point in doing it to any engine size under a 1.8 (Everyone to there own though)
The only BHP gains is 3-5 horses and about 6 donkeys. You can only really notice a proper decat sounds at around 2500rpm - 6000rpm but personally i would just much rather get a sports cat. :smiley:

I wonder what the insurance implications are if you have a crash!
I imagine unless you have declared a de cat to your insurance you won't be insured!
I also wonder whether any insurance company would even allow you to drive with a de cat?

Cool cool Thanks people CBA with that then lol. probs just stick a universal twin back box on the back more for look than performance. about insurance mines already gone up a ton with just loweing, alloys and tint on the car.

Where did you get 3-5 hp gain? Little did you know that on the Mk3 the cat is actually very free flowing and non restrictive. Up until 200hp it's good enough, along with the standard exhaust manifold. If you don't believe me ask Glen, he's the one who's tested it back to back on a dyno, and he's running just under 200hp on plenum in his valver.
And you can't compare decatting a 1l micra and a 6.3l v12 merc for example. Gains will be completely different depending on vehicle, condition of old cat.

I noticed my 1.6 MK3 being about a billion times faster after a decat. Old cat was completely blocked.
TBH mate, I wouldn't bother decatting it. I made my own decat and only really did it because the downpipe broke. The downpipe is part of the cat so it's either a big expense for a custom made thing or hope you're good with a welder. :wink:
The worry is there for me now though as Lakeside in Essex have mobile VOSA stations that test emissions etc and SOMEHOW I wasn't one they randomly checked and waved me past. I was bricking it.
Don't bother. Decent backbox and delete the middle box is very loud or just get a nice sounding backbox.
I have a stainless VR6 exhaust catback and sounds nice, not droney and nice deep tone. Don't bother mate, especially as it isn't straight forward. :wink:

Scorpion do some nice backboxes, got an oval one on mine with the middle box in place and its sounds nice and rumbly especially if you do the airbox too.

Forget the de-cat, unless you running a turbocharged engine and are squeezing every last bit of power out the engine you can, I would perform a mufflerectomy - remove the centre resonator with a straight pipe and fit a good high flow back box, it would be quite loud with the stock backbox, but if you fit a decent back box you can have anything from a slight purr to full blown chavvy growl, depends what box you put on it, but either way, ditch the stock silencers. Still wont gain much power though.

I have a decat, no MOTs here so no worry with that and it's declared. Scorpion cat back system with an oval box. Just ask Khare, it makes a lovely sound :wink:
