as said by screech
Possible switch failure on the stalk or the  wiper motor is on it's way out.

Disconnect battery, remove steering wheel, unplug all connectors, remove screws holding stalk on,and refit in reverse order.Front wiper motor is simple to replace, never done a rear as yet on a Golf but imagine it's pretty straightforward.

Cheers for that. I'll try that. The wiper arm mechanism goes up but clicks straight back down. The wiper blades move when I push the arm up but just doesn't want to stay up. Pushing it down does the intermittent wiper. The wash works and rear wiper works fine. I don't want to buy or attempt to fix if it's another issue. Thanks everybody for your advise......I can be a muppet
