Post by: jockgti on 07 May 2012, 10:40
so thinking about getting these 2 things, what size silicone piping do i need to join them? the turborevs smic is 2" inlet/outlet so about 50mm but what size is the ths pancake? and what length of tubing? do i need 2 bits of silicone 1 from pancake to smic and 1 from other end of pancake to what it joins to? cheers for any help guys

My have to get a reducer I got tyrolsport smic but that's 2.5" in/out, 63mm/2.5" is size of hose.

I've emailed THS to get dimensions

From what i've read on pancake replacement pipe there make really no difference.

They both fit together fine, no need for reducers

IMHO go for the full FMIC setup the results and logs I am seeing from the SMICs are very poor, they flow well but the cooling efficiency is not much better than the stock OEM units.

is it worth getting a full fmic for a spec 1 custom?,i'd be happy with 210bhp or if i fitted a fmic plus what i've got on car already (in sig) would it just make it cool better? and is fitting a fmic plus the remap possible in a day ?

also would i need to change spring in 007p?

My AUM made 210bhp 230ft/lb at R-Tech with just a pipercross panel filter and 007p. With your spec as it is you should make that easily I'd have thought.

Thats not what I got from doing logs from my stock SMIC and the Turborevs SMIC..

i thought it would be obvious that a FMIC would be better at cooling than a SMIC.

no matter how good the flow rates are...infact i would have thought that those SMIC which are like cubes would create more lag due to being deep. think of it like running a hose. That's why the TT twin side mounts with a cross pipe work well as standard and efficient for the levels as they gradually cool the air from to the other not all in one go in a deep cube shaped intercooler.

anyway FMIC has a long contact area against cold wind, a SMIC has a very small contact area... Therefore what Nick's found on the thousands of cars hes tuned seems right.

think it also depends on the fmic setup the cheap ebay kits can cause a lot of heat soak due to the pipe set up which then causes turbo lag which then makes your car down on power etc

tobys car had an ebay intercooler and made 304, from what's been said the flow rates in them are fine.

yes but he had a load of other mods to back it up not just a stage one on a k03 and the cooler was 3 times the size of the tiny ones on ebay

just think if he ran a forge fmic it could be more??

From what I heard the flow rates were fine?

on whos tobys or the ones with the mile long pipe work

tobys, but obviously toby and nick can answer it better, hear it from the horses mouth :D

yes tobys would be as its bigger than the normal size fmic kits on the bay bigger cooler more flow thats common sense small cooler less flow lots of pipework to slow it down so it heats in the pipes causing lag where as the ths and forge pipes are more the same as the standard setup which is less pipes

if that makes any sense if it dont hit the search button

EBay FMIC are good....... but you need to remember there is maths to CFM flow rates speed and power.... all above my head so i I say is make sure you use a FMIC with 2.5" inlet/outlet and 2.5 boost pipes.

Some of the ebay kits come wit 2" boost pipes which are smaller the the OEM system.

i see the toyo intercooler comes with 2.25" inlet and outlet is this going to be a problem/make much difference than 2.5"??

also surface area is 550MMx175MM (x 65MM deep) is this one alright to get for "up to 400bhp"??  :undecided:

its all about air flow via tubes and there is maths to it and air flow volume v speeds ect..

If your running 2.25 pipes you could still run 400bhp but working the turbo a hell of a lot harder,   We took a t304e  AGU from a 2.25" setup to 2.5" and gained nothing on the peak power, but from 5600rpm to 7500rpm we gained 52bhp across the whole band.
