It looks really cool

Can you explain the  'composed from 12 images' and how you did that?

The second one is much better, I feel on the first, the car gets lost against the background, especially the bonnet, roof and windscreen.  There's also some strange colour cast on the front wheel.  I'd probably either put a star burst on the massive specular highlight under the headlight (similar to the one on the grill) or try and tone that down slightly.

colour cast on front wheel is that its filthy and the back one isnt because the guy in the garage cleaned it when he fixed a puntucre     i agree about the lack of seperation from the background in the first, looking back i should have moved the flash round further to create a rim light  :embarassed:

I'd agree that the second one is better. But because of the shadow all around it, it looks slightly too super-imposed. The black shadow around the back end is particularly noticable.

The first one looks like it was taken at night with a big spot light and the background is far too dark. Besides, the front corner of the Insignia isn't particularly interesting at that angle. The car itself looks much better from the side in the second shot.

agreee rear angle does look more intresting

dodgey shadow around rear end is purely down to my poor, rushed editing  :embarassed:

used my 18-105 lens with a pl filter on the second which i think helped alot

3rd and final

on reflection i found it hard to do this kind of shot during the day as i knew i didnt really want to include the background as the location was poor.

Much better.
But clean the bonnet  oh and there's a little red thing at the top of the bonnet.
And the car needs straightening.

Otherwise, very good.

What's the focal length in use on them?

They look a bit barrelly to me.  As wide as the lens goes?

the first and 3rd are at 11mm on the tokina which i think performed well at that length in terms of distortion, the second was at 18 on the nikon 18-105

The joys of lightpainting!

Some really good efforts there, I would say watch out for the hotspots its one of those things that still gets me when im shooting these type of shots. Its all trial and error to get a nice flat clean 'lit' surface

how far away was the light source? The trick is playing with different shutter speeds ive found, I think most of the time I would use something like 1/160 which helps cut the hotspots down. The only other cc i can really give is watch out for the shadows with the front end shot there is alot of shadow on the floor could use a couple more shots to light the floor at the front :)

But keep it up looks like your getting the hang of it :)

Would it not also help to use either a big diffuser or fire into an umbrella to soften the light so you don't get hot spots?

Ive tried using some umbrellas but found that the light was too soft, but again its one of those things I may try again and just see what results I get

i think the main problem was shooting in the morning as theres waaay too much light. Had my flash on full power about 1.5m from the car in order to get enough light.. (tried shooting through an umbrella but couldnt get enough light onto the car) the main think i was looking at practicing was the processing of layers in 'shop for this kind of shot. (it took me ages!)

feel like ive learnt alot from this which is good

I barely do anything with flash, so I need to practice that myself (and buy some wireless triggers and things).

Practice makes perfect, so that if/when someone is willing to pay you, you can do a good job.

i think the main problem was shooting in the morning as theres waaay too much light. Had my flash on full power about 1.5m from the car in order to get enough light.

This is why I normally use a high shutter speed as all you want is the light from the flash and at about 1/160 all you will get is the light from the flash not a lot else ;) sometime 1/120 will do but give it a try and see how you get on I always make sure i have a normal exposure to work with as well so use that as a base then in PS just using 'lighten' layer masks just picks out the panels that have been painted

this is an example of using light painting at around midday, with the normal exposure you can then start to make it all work together and really pop

i shot this at 1/160th, thing was i aiming to get a black background straight out of the camera as the background was poor.
