Title: Stage 1 to Stage 2 Remap
Post by: redmaster on 03 May 2012, 12:39
Last month (or so) I had my car remapped by R-Tech to Stage 1.

As ever, now thinking maybe I could explore stage 2 (initally I wasn't sure how the map would perform, hence went stage 1 only).

My questions are...

1) Is there significant difference between stage 1 and 2 as it was going from stock to stage 1?

2) do you only pay the difference between a stage 1 and 2 map cost (given I've got stage 1 already) - or is it the full £350 (will try and get hold of Nick but I know those guys are seriously busy so thought someone might have the answer here)?

Thanks in advance.

Nick will charge you only the difference

and the gains are huge, make sure you got full turbo back with ko3s

Is turbo back the full exhaust system?

240bhp 260lbft as a rough guide

you will definitely notice the difference jumping from stage 1 to stage 2

Thanks both :)

Now to look into the cost of the mods I need to load up the stage 2!

Depends on engine spec.  Have you got k03 or K03s 1.8T??

Its not a matter of stage2 power.. a stage 2 remap could do 280bhp 330lbft like a stage1 remap could do 260bhp with thr supporting hardware mods.

With mapping the tfsi the main factor is flow, a stage 1 remap is only ever going to see 240bhp tops when running all the stock hardware, the restriction being flow and exhaust back pressures the more back pressure the more heat and less ignition can be ran "safe".  Remove the pre cat and alter the map and you can have 247bhp-250bhp from stage 1 boost requests.

You can put a stage2 remap on a stock gti tsi and still only make 240bhp aswell as a shed load of heat build up at the top end and major timing corrections.

The software mapping plays a small part in making more power, it just unlocks what the ecu asks for.  To get the more power from your tfsi you need to be looking at flow in and flow out a full turbo back exahust will unlock a bulk of power, a quality induction kit will allow for better top end breathing.

A tuner/remap is only as good as the engines physical flow rate...  the more you do the more power the remap will give..

Thanks Nick and to everyone else who took the time out to respond.

Apologies for not mentioning it was a MK5 GTI - I was typing quickly at work - but some excellent detective work from Rhyso obviously solved that one !

I'll give this some thought - the desireability of stage 1 plus no mods is that I can be insured through the mainstream providers and not get held to ransom by specialist providers. I'm worried that if I go down the mod route that might not be the case.

Might be a case I hold fire and just buy a different car next year - I'll let you know!

You might find the specialist brokers could save you £100s.

Keep your eye out on ebay for second hand exhaust, or to help unlock some more power ditch the cats on your oem system but this lands you with issues at MOT time.
