Hey all
The cambelt is due on my 115 AJM. Its done 40k miles but nearly 4 years.
Now, whats the best way to do this? I heard TPS is quite a lot and doesn't include some hydraulic tensioner?
Definately want genuine dont i? Also would a kit for a 1.6 golf be any good?
Ball park figure to expect to pay for parts and fitting (genuine?)

Where abouts are you mate? Don't forget to do the water pump too

I recently had my aum done all genuine parts water pump and coolant tank for 308 at a vw specialist that was actually the cheapest i got aswell which i was shocked with !

buy the parts direct from eurocar parts forum sponsor so you should get some discount and get a garage or somebody in the know to fit you do not need to buy genuine but do buy a full kit and waterpump

Not that far from me, I'm about 24miles West of Shrewsbury, pop in TPS Shrewsbury mate they will have the cambelt kit and waterpump in stock, might do bit of discount for you too :wink:

2 years warranty on VW parts afaik? I would only use genuine on parts like that, prices vs TPS aren't saving that much if not other way round

Yeh I usually do buy from TPS. Got a trade account via a mate too.
discount?! how :cool: they are pretty good guys in there mind you - just need to find a decent garage in the area - my uncle got his done in ludlow (corve bridge) for £320 inc genuine parts and felt they were competent

Any idea what a hydraulic dampener is? Is additional to the kit but worth doing?
As it stands, with this dampener i can get it done for £300 inc fitting

quick question re: cam belt, how often shuold it be changed? mine was last done around 40k and im at arounf 75k now. Im thinking i shuold change it as its been a good 4/5 years since i was last done.

1.8T is 40k or every 4 years :smiley:

Mines on 40k too but coming up to 4 years. Think timing is out too.
Can get the pump and kit from TPS for £70ish. That damn hydraulic thing is £75. But worth it I suppose :drool:

You need the correct tools if you have to ask i woud take it to a garage :smiley:
It used to be 80k when the cars first came out but there was issues with them snapping so VW revised the age and mileage times.

i mean is there any special tools needed. i can do most things but some cars need specialist tools which i dont have.
i can get the whole kit for £100 notes on euro parts is that right.
i have no history of a timing belt change in my history. Its showing 160k now so must surely have been done :)

from reading up on the forum. am i right in thinking that the issue with the water pump is the plastic splines?
does that mean if it has been changed before can i just change the timing belt?
do the aftermarket water pumps use the same design or are they better
i remember the water pump has been done on my car but mileage or whether the timing belt was done too is unknown

Yes the plastic impeller breaks and fails to spin on the shaft. Yes you can just change the belt if it has been done recently.
However VW dont specify a time to change it so if you are unsure how old / how many miles its done my advice is to change it as its only £30 extra and three bolts while you have it in bits already, if you dont and it fails at a later date you will have to remove the belt again.

just spoke to my mum. the waterpump was replaced a year and a half ago
whether the belt was or not now is another matter. i dont have a receipt for the work either :(

i just went to TPS to pick up the parts to do my 1.8t AGU.
all vw water pumps come with plastic impellar's?
the guy on the desk said vw do not recommend metal impellar's and all theirs are plastic?

That is correct :afro: the VW one is modified, metal ones are not the best idea as they will throw the belt if it seizes whilst the VW / plastic one will shear off.
