Title: Best engine flush for 1.8T?
Post by: Nino on 01 May 2012, 22:21
Might sound like a stupid question but I really want to look after this motor, I plan on (if i can) only use super fuel and service her every 6 months, With every oil change I want to do a full engine flush,  just because I have OCD like that. My problem is is there one for turbo engines? hich brabds should i stay away from I dont care about the cost, just want the best for my beauty :D

Waste of money seeing as you get little benefit.
The engine is designed to run on 95 octane fuel and isn't designed to take advantage of the knock resistance of higher octane fuel (if kept standard), and every now and again a shot of injector cleaner will make up for any 'special' additives.

If you get it mapped, you'll probably need to run it on higher octane fuel.

There are audi approved flushes which we use in the workshop if needs be for say oil contamination etc.
you will only run into problems if you haven't changed your oil for such a long time then all the bits of crap are broken up and then could get blocked in your pick up pipe and then carry on a problem to the pump. (this is what can happen with 1.8ts  by not changing the oil at intervals you can suddenly find the oil light on and bottom end noise.)

I have used a flush but i replaced the pick up pipe straight after and cleaned out the sump.

so a flush should be fine, like i said as long as it isn't way over due then you shouldn't cause yourself a problem.

I would reconmend changing the oil pick up pipe, and fitting a a magnetic sump plug along with regular oil changes with synthetic oil you won't go wrong.

Rather then using engine flush just buy some cheaper oil or just whatever you normaly use and after emptyinh your current oil fill it with the new stuff run it for a couple of days and then drain the oil again (leaving it to drain over night if possible) and maybe add a little when its still draining just to get rid of the crap in the bottom and then fill as normal.

i would still use v power as there may not be the biggest benefit until mapped but there is still benefit but it is also the best quality fuel as it is picked by shell from what they refine and not just "the bottom of the barrel cr*p that the supermarkets buy from them after they have had the good stuff.

as regards to fuel, when running 99 on standard car for this market it will be mapped to run on 95 so you won't get any gains untill its mapped when your telling the ecu to make use of better quality fuel such as 99. you can still take the gains of shell v power with its quality and addictives to help clean the valves etc over a very long period time of continue use if you don't mind spending the money. my only advise is don't use the crappy supermarket fuels. tescos own fuel is fine though. they're 99 momentum gave me the most torque. just low sulphor ones such as asda, sainsburys, jet, morrisions aren't what i would personally use unless i had to.

The fuel itself comes from the same refinery. It's just the additives that vary at point of sale.
Vpower doesn't offer anything worth the extra price, over keeping a clean engine with aftermarket additives every few tanks of fuel.
EDIT: Unless you have a mapped engine that can be more aggressive with spark advance, etc.

It's more a triumph for good marketing than good chemistry.

Wow! alot of replys, Well the reason Im looking up/asking questions is because I have only recently got my 1.8T shes currently on 116k with not much SH, as I said before my main aim is to look after her as much as possible, she has recently had a cambelt change and new water pump.

I plan of giving her a full service very soon, atm shes parked up while I wait for the logbook as her tax has run out

Thought this would be the best time to get the little problems sorted and get her serviced.
Thanks for the advice about not wasting money on sper fuel, i'll just use standard fuel from my local Esso I will fill the tank each month and add 1 treatment or ether Petrol magic or Red-ex (im guessing there is a kind for turbo engines?)

I plan on visting VW over the next few days and picking up factory oil, and a magnetic Sump plug (Thanks for that tip)
I will also bybass Euro car parts or GSF and get new plugs/leads, oil/air/polen and fuel filter. New thermo, temp sensor  TB gasget.

I also plan to remove my TB and give it a big clean, check all hose pipes for leaks, change coolent and clean or replace the water bottle.

Anymore advice guys? keep it coming :)

tbh everyone has there own opinions and im not going to argue anybody saying they are wrong but there are no negatives of using v power but there are 'possible' disadvantages to not using it and only works out a few £££ more per tank so i dont see why not use it

With little or no s/h then I would get the oil pick up pipe replaced asap, only going to cost you £16 for the parts and about 3hrs labour but will in the long term save your engine.

If it blocks up the engine will seize.

I see. Is that something I could do or worth a garage doing it? my skills dont go mega far, I have replaced a entire TB on my old mk3 inc Flange plate and gasgets.

tbh if its not got much sh the one main factor i would 100% do first is drain the oil and change the pickup pipe as this could cost you your engine a small price in comparison

It is not that hard to do, just a matter of dropping the sump etc, I would also recommend that you use 5/40 fully synth oil.

There certainly is no downside, beyond extra money.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to preach TEH EVILS of big oil, as they used pay my wages.
It's just that people can get sucked into sciency sounding marketing.

And I agree it's personal preference, if it works for you, who am I to disagree.

I'll keep my £350/year and fuel myself with beer.

hello mate, you can get a magnetic sump plug here http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=6807 worth paying for for what it does at that price :) and most people put new plugs in anyway each service  lol so you could just keep that and then not have to worry. ;)

as i said earlier, flushing your car will be fine as long as the oil has been changed at sensible times. if it hasn't been done for say 30k , 2 years or more then that's when you could run into problems as all that crap will be broken up. irronically we had an a3 that hadn't been done for good knows how many years. used a flush and that fooked the pump as the strainer would have got blocked. so as i said as long as its been done regually then it would be fine as there wouldn't be enough crap to suddenly block it.

magnetic sump plug above

5/40w snythetic, not 5/30 synthetic castrol edge, too thin for 1.8ts on high mileage! 5/40 they sound quiter

and replaced oil pick up pipe. as pumps are known to go on 1.8ts. simple, just undo all the sump bolts, 2 are a pain by the bell housing. and clean out the sump, and replace the pick up pipe, just 2 bolts! you'll be suprised how clean your engine oil is after.

Ok I honestly don't know when the last time this car had an oil change.
I will Get the oil pickup pipe changed and clean out the sump.

Thanks for all the advice :)

Anyone know what torque the bolts will need to be re-done up at on the sump?
