HELP SOMEONE!

8V mk2 gti running rich.  Plugs sooting up.  Having problems starting and smelling of petrol and clouds of smoke out of exhaust when it does start.  Runs ok once started and revved a few times.  Had a new exhaust a couple of weeks ago, everything from downpipe back.  Found a split in air intake hose, between air filter and engine and have duck taped it up temporarily. 

Any suggestions as to what I should look at??????

Oh, and by the way..... I have got new plugs, ht leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm.

take the duct tape back off and see if it goes back to how it was?
