Title: Boot lip protector
Post by: moby dick on 01 May 2012, 13:13
There is quite a bit of damage - scratches to the boot lip where things have been dragged across.Going to get this cleaned up but was there any original protection available for the lip? Secondly, there are two rubber straps just inside the left of the boot lip that look as if they were to hold something - Warning triangle maybe? Any insight appreciated? Thanks

There is a flimsly plastic cover to protect the boot lip. Good luck finding a good one.

I have also fitted a carpeted rear panel trim to hide all the gubbins and the back of the lights, from Newton Commercial.

The straps on the rear panel are for a warning triangle and the central locking pump. There can also be straps next to the near side wheel arch for a first aid kit.

There was. Plastic cover that went over the rear panel, held in with 4 plastic rivets, and the top section was trapped in position by the boot rubber...
VW made the part obsolete about 10 years ago... you will need plenty of luck finding a 2nd hand one undamaged, they are very brittle, to the point that ive literally had them drop to bits in my hands!

Rubber straps will be for the first aid kit

Didn't they use rubber straps for securing the jack to spare wheel aswell?

Thanks guys. The straps aren't for the first aid kit as I have that already. They are where the grey box is in Dubber 36's photo. Nice cover for the back of the boot in that pic too.

Just seen this pic which I think shows the triangle and straps. I just have to get the plastic strip now. (http://i1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa425/nicdavdi/Rear-carpets.jpg)

My Boot as it stands today...

They use straps for all sorts...

Ones with metal catches for the Jack & Central Locking Pump...

Plain ones for the Hazard Triangle and the 1st aid box... These are all different lengths too..

The plastic boot cover is a nice thing to have BUT they are so fragile and dont really offer any protection...

I've only ever had one that not broken...

Heres my cover, also note the 2nd sticker in the boot, build code list :nerd:
And, I wonder what VW had in mind, when they created a flat area, with 2 rivet holes in the rear panel cover?  my guess that it was intended for some sort of Decal/badge VIN or warning for cars built for the US/Canadian market... spooky!

Thom

You got the little clips that plug into the strap holes??

They are tiny clips - I only just found them on another car last month...

I would normally comment on overpriced genuine bits, however I will concede that Hella lamps are by far the best quality headlamp.

I've had various ones in the past including Lucas but either the beam pattern was fuzzy, or the build quality so bad that the bracket (holding the bulb retaining spring) snapped off as it was made from a cheap alloy  :undecided:

Where do they live Ken?

Are we talking about the oval holes that the warning triangle straps come through?
