Alright,
The missus just rang me to tell me she had a warning like pop up on the dash, she checked the manual and its the "alternator not charging" light.
The alterantor is only about 5 months old. What else could be the cause of this?
I've recently had a new stereo fitted with Ipod connectivity, could it be that leaving the ipod plugged in has caused this?
The car still starts no problem.
-
just an update, dropped it off at my mates garage and the alternators is only giving 11v as opposed to 14?
Getting the alternator swapped out under warranty.
-
so, even with a new alternator its only giving 11v, my mate thinks its possibly electrical, whats the first port of call do you guys think? The car starts and runs ok, obviously ive turned radio, aircon and what not off, how long will i get away with running the car like this as i need it for work and the soonest i can get it into a garage would be friday.
-
anyone?
-
Sounds like the alternator is not charging or you have a dead short somewhere
-
all i can think is mate check all the wiring around the alternator its all it can be really i gess
-
getting it looked at tomorrow, managed the 30mile drive to work, so boring without the radio :-)
Possible its a corroded earth, would this be a big job?
-
Just a long shot, but double check your battery is ok. I had the same prob a while back (not a golf) and it turned out two cells on the battery where fooooked and the alternator couldnt get the charge in so was displaying poor readings.
Just a thought????

Just dropped it off at th garage earlier, as I was driving it I encountered the issue first hand, the words ALTERNATOR WORKSHOP appeared and there was a loud beep every 3seconds. The car was still driving fine and after a few moments the error vanished.
I guess I'll see what the garage hav to say tomorrow.
-
update: the garage have had a look and it seems there is a correded wire in the fuse junction box thats sits on the battery, as soon as he said this i remembered an AA man mentioning i shuold take a look at it about a year back. They are putting a new one on and seeing if this helps.
-
so, heres the culprit. Just a bit burnt out.

always good to know, hopefully it wont happen again. good job i know a few mechanics, got the part at cost price and only 30 min labour. :-) Saved a bit there

Glad you found the problem.
I'm just waiting for this to happen to ours, as the same fuse box on ours often feels "a bit warm". What actually causes it to go pop?

no idea, i know f**k all about electrics. i just know that an AA man spotted an issue about a year back and I chose to ignore his advice.
