Posting this on behalf of a friend.
"Got a new set of cv joints, passat inners, mk2 golf outers for my mk2 1.8t conversion and have a query regarding the fitting....
On the passenger side drive shaft (shorter one), when fitting the inner cv joint I noticed that the guide I was using said there should be a thrust washer (the inner face of which is toothed to match the drive shaft spline), however, with this washer fitted the cv joint doesn't slide far enough down to allow the circlip to be fitted. The toothed washer wouldn't sit right at the bottom on the driveshaft spline which is what was causing this problem.
The only way the joint would fit is without the toothed thrust washer (the kit didnt come with one which is what made me think it's ok) but the result is this (a gap between the CV joint and circlip):

The gap is a little less than a millimetre...have I done this correctly?"
Thanks

If it had one before, then there should be a washer to get the correct spacing?
Was it OEM some after market companies just dont give you what you need I would take the old one off and use that.

***Cue Friend***
Kit was aftermarket - "J and R"
I unfortunately don't know if it had one before.
I put the driveshafts in to be powder coated so took the cv joints and washers off, put the parts on the work bench.....some time passed, bench tidied, parts moved.....
From what I can gather all CV joints should have a thrust washer - ETKA seems to show one so I'm guessing I've just got the wrong type of washer???
Should have mentioned the Driveshafts are passat items as well.
The washer I have is toothed (taken from another set of drivesafts I had sitting about) think I need one without these teeth?
Not an easy one to answer but if anyone has any experience on the matter it would be much appreciated.

Make sure your nice shiny powdercoating isn't pushing the CV joint out and stopping the washer from fitting.
That needs to be snug in there.
-
Powerder coating definately isn't causing the problem - ends were taped up prior to paint and I cleaned them up again before I started the re-fit.
That needs to be snug in there.
Another definate is that I'm missing something/have fitted something incorrectly if it's meant to be snug.....

Is there a part number on the shaft or do you know what car it came from?
We can check on ETKA/Vag-Cat to see if there are different washer styles?

One must be toothed the other not. Found a post on a passat forum stating that the outer CV has a toothed washer and the inner isn't.
So thinking will order up both and see what sticks, they cant be much
Cheers

You are looking about £10-£15 for both I hope?
Yes one of them is more expensive must be the toothed one.

the thrust washer is sided there is a right and wrong way round to fit it.
if fitted the wrong way round you cant get the circlips in, turn it round and they'll fit
