Title: Heater matrix
Post by: Sugar79 on 06 June 2005, 09:33
OK, I am getting closer to solving the overheating problem, my heater matrix!! there is hot water going in and NO water coming out!! haven't a clue how this could happen unless the garage who changed my cambelt messed with my cooling system!!

Are heater matrix easy to replace or would it be easier to get someone to power flush it???

Cheers

bit of a mission to replace.. just the time it takes, it isnt really difficult but need to be patient

as for blowing it out... last time i tried that with a pressure steam cleaner (on my old xr2 when i was 18) there was a loud pop and a lot of water in the footwells, managed to explode the matrix

Are you sure it's the matrix as the mk4 water pump impellors have a habit of coming loose therefore causing overheating . Did they change the pump when they did the timing belt ?

no i didnt have the water pump changed, but i really dont think it is the pump, my dad checked over the car yesterday, we changed the thermostsat first as some pipes where getting hot and some was cold, tested the theromsatat in hot water and it worked fine, so under some more investigating and Gurgling noises coming from the back we found the pipe which goes to the matrix was red hot and the exit pipe cold, so we pulled the exit pipe off with the engine running to find no water coming out the matrix.
I think its blocked with something, which is stopping the water circulating, a small amount of "muddy" looking water came out but then it stopped, the rest or the pipes have that red G12 collant in it which is clear. all very odd as ive had no work done to the car other than the cambelt really.

makes sense, matrix is shagged so the hot water has to go back through the engine.. now about that webcam..

what, water going in the matrix and not coming out????

What exact symptoms did your car have???

if the pump has started to go it may not be making enough pressure to get the water through the matrix, if you can get to it.. just plumb a garden hose into the matrix feed and see if anything comes out (disconnect it completely first obviously)

garden hose wont reach to the front of my drive unfortunalty

on mine the impeller was almost broken in two so it was moving the water a bit but not much, so the heaters stopped blowing hot air. the new water pumps have metal impellers now.

but did you still have water coming out of the matrix?? because when my dad took the hose apart he had to block the other half off with his finger and he said it was trying to force his finger out and he had a hard time trying to stop the water coming out of that hose, but the hose that comes from the matrix, there was no water there at all, as if something is stuck in the matrix.

i didnt take the pipes off the matrix but with squeezing them there was no pressure in the pipe, so i assume not much water running through it. I got the water pump changed because it is a very common part to fail on mark 4s and most people recommend getting it changed with the cambelt

yeah i never knew about changing the water pump till after i had the cambelt changed, i think i'll get the new matrix and get it fitted along with the service, if it is the water pump, least i have a new matrix ready for when the winter comes i suppose, and if it is the matrix then ive saved some money lol (for the time being lol)
