gosh i'm posting up loads now,
most of you must know ive just ventured into the world of the mk2 16v, great little car compared
to my mk3 its got so much more character.
since owning the car 3weeks or so ive given it a good valet to try get rid of a diesel like smell
and i cant seem to get rid of it.
done all carpets, seats, boot , everything on the interior and it still remains.
anyone had the same issues?
i'm either thinking its dripping gear box or engine oil and burning off the
engine however it doesnt smell from the vents in the dash.
my mrs said it smells more like eggs than diesel but i disagree.
seems to get stronger when driving along.

Upper lips?

Split oil breather hose. Check all hoses for splits.
-
Heater matrix. :lipsrsealed: check and keep a close eye on your coolant level, look out for telltale steam coming though the central dash vents, the matrix is directly behind them, also check your centre conlsole for water drips, and, for damp carpet in the front footwells

so ive booked a days holiday off work to sort a few things on the golf tomorrow, i didnt want to go off subject but the main thing was to free up the rear calipers a bit more and fit new handbrake cables it
wouldnt even hold on a dead hedgehog .
i had a quick nose around the engine last night when stopping for fuel and didnt notice any hoses
hanging or split however it was just a quick look over.
anyway will report back

Ok so today I got some time to check out the smell turns out on the bottom of the plastic air box the injectors sit on, there was a pipe leading to the bottom that was hanging off I think its an oil or air breather pipe.
To describe it goes into like a t- piece plastic connector with the electric connection on one end
Thanks guys think the smell might of gone taking for a spin after a cheese burger.
-
ok its been a while on this subject, i had my cheeseburger and left it a week or so and the smell is still there if not worse, the pipe that was hanging off is now connected and the smells hasnt gone.
theres no sign of water on the passenger or drive side wells
so tonight i'm going to have the heater pipes off and give em a wash, scuttul panel will be removed and cleaned and sprayed through the heater fan
hoping this might cure my dead body smells,

Still stand by my upper lip reply.
Damp underlay

Get your head down by your carpets and have a good sniff!
If you have a small leak thats going into the footwell, even if its evaporating enough to combat surface water, your soundproofing will be rotting and trust me, it absolutely stinks! Just like the egg your missus is describing too! If its not coming from the vents, its doubtful its coming from the bay I reckon.

Made my escape to the garage when mrs started watching eastenders, only just come in after 2 hours, took the scuttle panel off and where the blackbox is located it was covered in what looked like oil or gearbox oil anyway the drain off hole was blocked completely and all the stuff had backed up. Was very careful removing panel as herd someone on another forum found a dead animal lol.
Haven't tried it yet but was hacking when clearing it out so need a bath now and a cup of tea
