Title: Has anyone cut their springs to lower their car?
Post by: Danny on 06 June 2005, 05:09
Whats up people?
I was thinking about cutting the springs on my 84 cabby while I wait to gather the bucks for some coilovers. So has anyone done this, and if they have how many coils did they clip? Thanks.

Don't do it - It's dangerous, and will affect the handling/braking etc. Buysome budget springs to last, from ebay, but I would really advise against cutting old ones up.

I agree.  You can buy a pair of budget springs (Apex I think) for about £60.

The people that have done it are unable to answer you because they are all dead followng the resulting car crashes.

Seriously dude, not a cool idea.

You can buy a set of lowering springs for as little as a ton. You would have to take the springs off to cut them anyway, so the cost of fitting the new springs is not an issue anyway.

Seriously, the car will not handlle at all. I bought a car that had the springs cut and it was the most dangerous car I have ever driven - the handling was way too unpredictable and it handled like sh*t.

It's perfectly fine to cut your springs, if you drive a ford. Let's face it the more of those that get written off the better.

Funnily enough, the car I had with chopped springs was a ford!

not a good idea bud! stay well away from cutting them! it may be cheap but it just not worth the risk of losing control and killing you and your mates/members of the public, just get some cheap springs if your on a budget! at least there designed to be lower rather than hack at some that arnt!

BAD IDEA!!!!!

Given how much springs cost, is it really worth the risk?

By the way, I have a set of Bilstein ones which include the rear dampers which were on mine for about 12 months if you interested - regardless, don't cut yours!!!
