Title: oil
Post by: dean07 on 29 April 2012, 10:30
I have a 61 plate gti. Checked the oil and was just on minimum. Top it up with the 1 litre bottle you get when you get thecar when new. Now it is above the maximum. Will this be ok? Car is 7 months old and only done 3500. Do all gti.s use this much oil in so short a period? Cheers

If you dont ask you dont get ,each car I've had from new I have always asked for a pint of oil. New cars tend burn oil in the first couple of thousand miles, but haven said that not all new Golf's burn oil

None of the MKV or MkVI GTI's I have owned have burned oil from new and only ever needed a minor top up about half a litre mid way between annual services, mine average 10-12k per annum. I could leave the engines for whole year but choose to do so to keep them topped up. My ED35 has done 3k and still on max.

Yep I got oil too, dealer said they always give a spare ltr of the stuff(mine anyway) cus in there experience the new cars burn more oil to start with...can't say I've had an issues of yet tho...

I did about 27000km before the first service and didn't have to top up any oil since new. It seemed to not use any oil at all. Oil level was still at max just before the service oil change. I've driven 17k km after the oil change and haven't needed to top up oil. Think my long road trip to the alps during the first week of ownership did the car good. :) Drove 6,5k (km) in 9 days.

If you dont ask you dont get ,

Correct.

VW used to supply a litre of oil with every new car along with a make shift funnel and gloves I think. I asked for some oil when I picked mine up and I got 1 litre Castrol SLX 5w/30 Longlife, I'm just coming to the end of that first litre at 13k. I bought another litre which is now in the engine oil side pocket in the boot. Its just a cost cutting exercise when you think of the cost of a litre of oil with every new vehicle they sell.

Thing is, you gotta assume the dealer filled the sump up to the top dipstick mark when you bought the car... Unless you know for sure, then you're not really sure *how* much oil has been used.
I wouldn't think 2mm over the top would cause harm.... 2cms yes!

Now that you've topped up, do another 3.5K and see how it goes (although that may take you pass the next service date, unless you're on long-life services?)

I read a VW Driver mag a few years ago and it stated that a more aggressive regime for running-in is preferable to a gently gently touch as the bores never seem to achieve the slight lip at the top that helps in oil control, Now I'm sure they don't mean rag the ar$e of your pride and joy, but lets say, a quicker acceleration up to cruising speed etc.

If your at all worried, bring it to the dealers attention so that in a years time and it's still losing oil, they don't fob you off.

Can't remember exactly, but IIRC official figures are 1ltr for 10k mls is still within limits!! Should say in the manual....

Cheers Andy m8,never thought of the dealer not checking it, just assumed it would be. Its just a touch above the max. I had a Bmw 320i m sport coupe before the Gti and it had an electronic dipstick which just counted down to the minimum mark, flashed up a message and told you to put a litre in, so you could,nt overfill whatsoever. A cracking gizmo. Is it just me cos I,m getting older and the eyes are not what they were but I think the marking on the dipstick could be better but thats just me. Many Thanks Deano
