My mate Ian007miles check my car recently with his vagscanner due to the engine management light coming up, it came up with 17704 fault code, I got my coolent tempreture sensor changed (from vw Bosch part) and its still showing the code ? What could it be ? Someone......

thermostat most likely, unless you've been really unlucky and bought a knackered coolant sensor. where does the needle sit on the temp gauge in the dash while you're driving?
-
It sits at 90 but takes a long time to get there, and the coolent sensor was brand new only purchased it yesterday so it must be the thermostat, any idea of how much it will cost ? Cheers btw

wiring could be faulty.. a mate of mine his car was showing coolant temp faults. put a new sensor in still there.. checked wiring and found a break in the wire

the code was cleared before re scanning i take it?

If you are replacing go with the Neuspeed 82deg part:

The other day mine came up with a fault saying coolant temp sensor, and when I drive along the temp gauge sits right at the bottom of cold... Would this be the thermostat?

i'd say thats the coolant temp sensor. you'd normally get some signs of heat with a broken stat

^this. if you dont erase codes after replacing suspect parts it will remain in the dtc memory as an intermittent fault in most cases. (although generally with the error in mapped cooling system code the fault lies with the stat unless you have other tell tale signs)

Would I need anything else or just that ? After fitting the new temp sensor it wasn't showing anything got it cleared and only yesterday, a day after fitting the new temp sensor its showing 17704 so I'm hoping it is the stat anyways on the bright side my lm's are ready for pick up and funds for 007p and forge tip along with r32 kit has started so happy wither way :smug:

whats the point of this part??? :undecided:

Thermostat opens earlier and coolant is fed to the radiator sooner. Coolant temp through the block is reduced, therefore keeps engine / oil temps down ;)
-
yaaay got my thermostat fitted yesterday, fcuked my hand up and so did ian and was a b!tch but we managed, now i need to fill it up with anti freeze :)
-
not that it's really needed on a road car
