Hey recently purchased my mk2 16v gti and ran like a dream until weds when in the rain started cutting out and wouldnt idle smoothly (800-1000 surging) and when driving struggled and spluttered at 4k rpm, No amount of wd40 helped and dizzy was bone dry, then the day after cut out and wouldn start (in tge dry) at all not even try to fire...
I have spark and fuel...
I have since removed the throttle body and all air system and throughly cleaned out the air/ fuel metering unit checked all electrical connections (not earths yet) and now tries to fire up but just wont 'catch' and run.
If i press accelerator the engine tries harder...
When cranking engine a relay clicks every 1/2 second (cant figure which one or if it did this before)
Thinking possible relay problem? Which is for the ecu?
Any help or pointers would b helpful, thankyou!

One word but i dont think affects how my car runs :-D

Get someone to crank it whilst you rotate the dizzy and see if that fires it in to life. After though you will need to get it timed properly. This could mean a very VERY gentle drive to an applicable garage.

Check the throttle closes fully every time and hits the isv microswitch every time also, if the throttle is open, and switch not made it can make starting harder/ impossible. Also check overrun valve hasn't popped out causing an air leak etc. Does fuel pump prime for a few seconds etc as usual?

So yester day i had another look at the car and cleaned gearbox earth had a look around and it started but ran like a bag of nails... Popping and spitting through exhaust and pccasionally inlet then notices a tar like goo from the coil so changed that and started but ran same then cleared up and idled fine revved lovely engine got to temp then i turned off to clear tools away came back to start and wouldn even try to fire again... So back to square one really!
Anything that could cause like a on off symptom like this?
Cheers
