Bmw 3 series, friend of mine at work just changed from an A6 avant to a very nice 320d estate and it looks and drives very nice indeed.

have to say i am very tempted by a e46 320d. Seem very reliable except for wishbone bushes which is negligible coming from a mk4!

that skoda is quite cheap though for a newish car!

My Octavia is just like that one ^.
It's a very good car, Golf chassis, VW engines and build quality. The estate has more luggage space and rear legroom than a Audi A4 Avant.
Mine was £5600 for an 07 plate with 40k with the 1.6 FSI engine (cheap tax and very economical). Spec level is good too.
I might have to sell mine in order to get an automatic (if the wife passes her test in an auto).

Can definitely recommend the Octavia.

Just answered this question myself with an e36 330d Sport. Dont bother with the 320 unless your anal about fuel consumption, they dont have enough beans but the 330 is quick enough to be interesting. Try and go for the 2003 onwards model with the 6 speed box if you can find one (I took 3 months looking and still didnt get the spec I really wanted, plumping for an earlier post-facelift one instead) as they have more oomph and MUCH better spaced gears for the same economy. FWIW I appear to be getting around 35MPG.
The only warning I have is that the boot really isnt any bigger than a mk2 Gti's! Oh and dont be put of by mileage, they have all been to the moon and back or are at prices that will make you look at an E92 instead. Things to look out for are broken rear springs, swirl flaps in the intake (going to remove mine shortly) and the usual wishbone issues that all BMW's seem to suffer from. Only problem I have found is that Im already looking at upgrading the suspension as its a heavy old beast and has more roll than I like but Im sure a bit of Bilstein B12 action and some ARB's will sort it while improving the ride at the same time  . I also have plans to pop over to R-tech to see what they can do to get it up to/above later spec oomph as they are only down the road .

35mpg isn't enough tbh, i'm doing 360 miles a week just in the commute! I'm happy with the performance/economy level of the pd150, its just the chassis is a bit sh!t so i reckon a 320d will be ideal for me, with maybe a cheeky remap!

the boot must be significantly longer than a hatchbacks though!?

Boot capacity was something I was looking at:
Octavia Estate: 580 litres
BMW 3series : 435 litres
Golf Mk5 Estate: 505 litres
Passat Estate: 513 litres
Audi A4 Avant: 442 litres

The Octavia's boot is deep and goes lower than the bumper, even with a full size spare.

As for economy, my 1.6 FSI petrol engine can manage to get 42mpg ish quite easily and it's not too much of a slouch driving around either.

Surprised someone hasn't come in with the usual "use the search function" riposte, the amount of times this topic has come up.

My brother-in-law had one of these was a lovely car and bl00dy rapid too although the parts and servicing were astronomical.

Trust me, its tiny for an estate! Dont forget the roof is pretty low, the tail is more like that of a hatchback and there is a lack of depth due to the diff. Dont think I could hack the slowness of the 320d, its even slower than a B5 passat 130 judging by the figures on Parkers and they are too slow for my liking but if economy is your thing then fair play. They are certainly very nice cars!
