Title: time for the engine to go.
Post by: off_the_cuff on 26 April 2012, 15:34
so the time has come to give up trying to revive my 8v.
I picked up a tuned 16v engine for a gd price so thats going in :D
does any1 know if theres anything that might cause a problem during the swap?
got the complete engine, full running gear, full loom and clocks.
do i need a new manifold?

You need ecu and transponder too. Also need 16v front engine mount and a 16v complete exhaust system.
8v is 50mm
16v is 55mm

my cars got a miltek exhaust system will that do? the only standard part is manifold and downpipe

Aren't the 8v's cable clutch and 16v's hydraulic?

yep

but can still work, we did it with the 16v car i robbed my bits from to convert mine to hydro, we even fitted the 8v box to the abf

Didn't know you could do that, sweet :)

whats the transpoder?

Little black box under the dash, behind the clocks i believe, has two wires going into it :)

is that the box that links to the chip in the key for alarm/ immob?
Title: Re: time for the engine to go.
Post by: F17BAD on 26 April 2012, 17:41
yeah bit of a pain if your robbing the bits off the 16 valve car and replacing the 8v bits

but if your car is a 8v you could swap out the lump and mate it up to the 8v box using 8v flywheel, and bingo

to run 16 box and hydro bits he is gonna need all hydro parts and gear linkages plus the correct mount brackets (will still need this for drivers rear side (thats bracket not mount)

driveshafts are all ok

needs chip from donor key too to work with transponder unless ECU has been defeated

its got an 8v box already on it so should be sweet :D
not sure about the transponder, will need to look. if i dont have it can i just buy a transponder and chip?

need the one that was with the ECU mate, where did u get the engine ? whats it come out of ?

guy had it in an estate with the intention of putting it in a mk1 golf, as far as i know i bought everything to do the swap :S
so i may need a new ecu aswell?

Im looking at replacing the 8v for a valver also. Do you need new radiator and hoses etc?

Radiator will work fine, al hose locations same, will need the engine hoses tho so make sure they come with the engine unless u want to buy all new

@ off the cuff, you will deffo need the ECU

No you won't...

You can adapt the Mk3 ECU & Immobiliser using VCDS (VAG Com)...you go into the ECU/Immobiliser modules and into Adaptation.

Go to the 'Engine' module.
Select 'Adaptation'
Press 'Read'
Wait...
Press 'Save'

Go to the 'Immobiliser' module.
Select 'Adaptation'
Press 'Read'
Wait...
Press 'Save'
That's it...

You will need an immobiliser module, ignition switch ring and matching key if you are using the immobiliser type ECU....and of course, you will need the diagnostics hooked up and working.

I've had 3 different ECUs in my car, and re-coded the ECU/immobiliser every time...takes 30 seconds.

Just making sure, is the 16V lump is out of a mk3 ?

can i not just swap the 8v ecu for 16v then reprogram it? instead of tracking down a new transponder and chip?

Do you have a 8v currently with an immobiliser?
If so, then yes...you fit the 16v engine, loom and ECU and 'adapt' the ECU/Immobilisers so that match.

Can you match a mk4 ecu too mk3 immobiliser?

I'm doing a mk4 2.8 swap

Nope.
I don't believe so. The Mk4 uses a more secure form of coding.

The Mk4 immobiliser is in the clocks IIRC, so you will need to run them, or have the immobiliser defeated in the ECU by one of the remapping specialists.

Yep, had an issue with a friends.. wouldn't start without the clocks ;)

mk 4 needs immob defeat.. immobiliser is in the ECU not the clocks but.....

if your transplanting to another mk4 it needs clocks to match it as theirs a further twist to the tail as they have to be either immob 2 or immob 3  (clocks and ECU)  can't mix and match.. Immob 3 started in 2001

you can match any immob 2 clocks to any immob 2 ECU on Vagcom (full)  as iv done so..  its a bit more difficult matching up Immob 3

but non of this matters here
