Title: New exhaust...need a cat?
Post by: skcollob_ho on 26 April 2012, 09:58
I am thinking of replacing the exhaust system, and getting rid of the cat. Then a mate mentions that as of next year, cats are mandatory on diesels for their MOT's.

Is this true?

Happened as of Jan the 1st THIS YEAR. Any car that left the factory with a CAT must have one for an MOT.

Bugger.

The emissions test is still n/a right? So theoretically, I could take a cat apart, and weld it around a straight-through pipe?

Would I get away with this, or would i need to find a 'sympathetic' MOT station?

You would have to find a nice MOT tester I guess. Saying that my CAT is hollowed out and passed an MOT sooo....That is a good idea about welding a cat around a straight pipe. Give it a go...if it fails fit a cat then replace after MOT.

Just give it a service before the MOT and stick some redex or similar through it to clean it up a bit and perhaps a little blast on the way to the MMOT
