ok so curruntly own a 2.0 gti mk3, but in the next few months ill be finnishing of funds to get a mk4 1.8T, but, from what i understand about small and big ports, and that the agu engine cant be used with a ko4 easily, i also remember one of the engine codes prone to sludge.
so which is the best year to go for? looking up to 2001 years as cant stretch that far to newer currently,
my plan on this would be to lower a little full turbo back exhaust and depending on alloys change them, then later on change for a k04. but i want to make the right purchase now rather then finding i have a engine that ill struggle to upgrade. im not looking for crazy power but the 250/270 mark is ok for me as its fwd, any more would be a waste imo.
so if any one can help me. and also suggest the right spec, would prefer aircon and leather etc but may have to settle for a lower spec and put leather in as budget isnt unlimited,
thanks

get an ARZ from what i understand its got the AGU bottom end and AUM head i think so its got a strong bottom end and decent head on it but i am sure culley wanye or rich will be on soon to correct this and tell you more as they are very helpful
-
i think the ko4 021 is more or less a strait bolt on to agu engine and with other mods can see in the region of 280-290 bhp i may be wrong and if i am someone will correct me

this is where toby will step in

Who me?
Well iv got a AGU which has a large bore head. = more flow.
I went down the ko4 rout, it's not a direct bolt on as such
Ko4 manifold turbo oil and water lines. Down pipe decat , tip, larger injectors, big fmic, 2.5" intercoller pipe work,
Tbh I chased the power! And now it would be stupid to throw ££££ at it as I loose most in 1-2 gears as it is now
I advise getting a agu, and bolt on a ko3s which is a direct replacement , fmic tip and injectors and a decent custom map ( r-tech )
-
my mistake its ko4 001 :embarassed:
that you dont need to change downpipe or manifold if using
-
Yeah!
Basically a ko3s hybrid
All about the garret gt28 on a s3 that Ben who built my engine has put in his s3
Can't wait till his is mapped
-
Agu has bigger heads but no VVT, AUM smaller heads plus VVT.
Id go ko4-001 ebay version with agu, send it to r tech for map and turbo tweaking.
Maybe in future get meth injection.
If you want cheap quick power, t3/4 ebay turbo with manifolds to suite, some minor work required but 350bhp.

So wot does vvt stand for on a Aum
-
variable vain turbo
or variable valve timing
-
I bet hes none the wiser
-
You got that still have not got a clue
-
either have i
-
That's a reare 1 cully u normally no every think
-
Only downside is trying to find an AGU without spaceship miles, nothing worse than taking a 130k car, and then shoving an extra 100 odd hp through it, i know this could be said for AUM and AUQ's but chances are youd find an AUM or AUQ with lower miles, plus youve got 6 speed on the AUQ , probably wrong but just my take on it

dont forget audi a3 1.8t agu as i had an engine with only 49k miles on it from one  they are out there just very hard to find as you say
and turbokid i got a little understanding about it but it is very little
-
True cully! just avoid the ones on ebay where they have lovely round figures, alot are around "77,675" genuine miles, but i forgot to take a reading before it came out of the car ...........yeh sure ........lets assume thats a 177,000 miler then!

that sounds about right for ebay

my engines on 118k miles.
running 300bhp 286lbft
sweet as a nut!
-
TBF those 1.8ts providing you stick to the oil changes they wil be fine. I've had a couple of A3s , A4s in our workshop with as much as 240,00 miles on the clock with the 1.8t and run fine.
(Audi, VW engines tend to have carbon build up/sludge build up, not only down to city driving where it doesn't get warmed up but can form on cars that have had regular servicing.)
My advice would be to change the oil pick up pipe (strainer) because if it blocks it can then make the oil pump fail. You will hear the bottom end being very noisy before you see the oil pressure light.
That in itself will add miles to the engine life and should help when being mapped to create some healthy torque figures and give you that peice of mind.
Also the master tech was saying to me the other day that 1.8ts that were driven hard from new tending to have more hp and go better than ones that were just pottered around and probably had low mileage but tend to last longer - so buying one from a carefull lady owner with 20,000 on the clock may not be as great as it seems.
My 1.8T AGU is on 115k and running sweet.

if your wanting to mod it to 270bhp then why not just look for a BAM. remap and your there, costs more for the engine but youll save money youd spend getting an agu to that power
-
f**k it just get summat like an evo and be done with it
-
my agu is on 165,000 and runs like a dream and is mapped to 190 bhp never misses a beat, its a very strong engine if i were you get the agu dont really matter about how many miles its done as long as its been looked after, buy my golf if you want getting a mk5 gti or ed30 soon so mine will be surplus lol
-
now ed30  is summat else

evo's are over rated lol

-
save yourself even more money and buy a bike
-
S3/LCR and a remap!
-
lol, not sure why i didnt get topic emails but thanks for the info, as far as ive looked in to it a ko3s if it hasnt got one already, go for a 3" down to 2.75" samco turbo intake pipe with forge 007p or compbrake one, then change all the water coolant hoses to samco ones along with a fmic again of course samco hoses (but depending may use another company ie:sfs etc) then consider a better rad for better engine cooling along with a oil cooler, but yer 270bhp is more then enough i have a mk3 gti and can spin in 1st and nearly 2nd. had a r5gtt running 190bhp and that was all over the place in the wet with 1st 2nd and mostly 3rd spinning if i made it, so with upwards off 270bhp would be fine. quick enough for a family car.
just trying to decide on 3dr or 5dr. 3dr looks nice and stances nice, with a decent looking front bumper and alloys, but then the 5dr would make sence as i have 2 kids, and tbf they dont look that bad. mmm dunno
so will a 2000/2001 mk4 have this aum engine? and what one has the ko3s? the 2001 had then fitted standard didnt they?
-
i think all aum have k03s but i may be wrong
-
Yeah aum's have k03s 2001 onwards, 2000 are agu with a k03
-
okay, i had an agu with a ko4 set up, and that was immense...
question is, I have an auq now, and its got 76k on the clock. I want to go for 280-300bhp in summer, what step do I take? I would want ko4 to be honest, but what parts do I need?
-
so if i went for a 1999 audi a4 quattro 1.8t, what engine does that have the agu? seller states its the 180bhp model.
that or a passat but any thing that has that 1.8t engine in it lol

Yeah get a k04' read Toby's build thread and it will say what u need.
Roughly oil/coolant lines, manifold, downpipe, injectors, 3" maf

If he states it a 180bhp then its not a agu, ask him for the engine code mate.

yer shame that one sold, he had some one coming to view before i emailed, but found this one, seems clean, years mot, altho states none, via text he says its got a years mot, but if hes go the mot im happy. what you lot think, going to stick bid in if you lot think its good
no picture of passenger side but he sent me it by phone and same as all other sides, broken clocks but has new s/h one, and abs fault which seems to be common across these a4's
