Been thinking of investing in a 1100d for a while now and after seing lowlifedubber is getting on with his i think im going to bite the bullet
http://www.jessops.com/online.store/products/80181/show.html
saw that. seems a reasonable price to me and the finance isnt bad either.
question is though. whats that lense like. will it suffice for a while ?
Have other stuff at home. (Bag. sd cards. tripod. ect ect ect so literally the only thing i need is camera and lense)

With £30 cashback the D3100 is worth the extra £10

If you do get the 1100D the kit 18-55 is a good starter lens.

I shoot nikon but I've found the lower end canons to be better than the nikons
-
I'll be getting a Nikon d3100 in the next few weeks.
-
Hmm you may have just thrown a spanner in the works.
worth the extra £43?

I'm using a Nikon D3000. Its taught/teaching me alot. Just means you have to work that lil bit harder to get shots you want. Still very happy with it. Only considering upgrading the lense at some point. Brilliant for someone starting out. You can see some of my photos in the main photography thread.

What's the difference in lens prices across the two brands, I know the Nikon 50mm f1.8 i quite a chunk more than the Canon equivalent.
Oh, be quick:

For the D3000 series i know you need the af-s lenses with the silent wave motor inside. So they cost a lil bit more.

£87 vs £86 at the moment anyway.
Nikon glass is generally considered better quality anyway.

184.99 for the 50mm af-s (af-s to work with the cheaper end of nikon cameras) on Amazon
Not sure on canon lenses.

-s denotes the silentwave motor equivalent of the Canon Ultra Sonic Motor (USM)
The AF version is £87 on amazon

NB Nikon offer a 50MM f/1.8 with and without a silent motor, Canon only offers the silent motor on the f/1.4
I'd double check the lens compatibility first though.

Nikon seems too confusing! Never really looked into it.
The OP may be better going to a shop and actually using Canon/Nikon/Sony and see what he like.

lol
It's no different from USM or L the only "confusing" one is the G which means Gelded, meaning they don't have an aperture ring (aperture can only be set by the camera).
