I have a golf mk3 5 DOOR in storm grey. was gunna tint the rear window, just the rear window not the rear side windows. i know its personal preference, but does anyone think it would look stupid?

looks far nicer on a 3 dr, but, on your colour you might get away with it, i wouldnt even attempt it on mine :undecided:

would agree with doing the back windows aswell, can take the glass out of the door to do them again.. you ever done tinting before?

I have just done mine, to be honest, the rear window is by far the hardest window to tint, and for 6 metres of tint, you can get on ebay for £8.99, that's enough in a role to get it wrong a few times (as i found out) so i would do all the rear windows, it looks so much better.

when you guys tinted rear side windows, did the film go over the bobbles around the window ok, or did you remove them?
if so how did you do it?

yeah did mine myself. rear window was hard. i'm left with fingers and air bubbles dont show in photos or from a distance but im just going to pay for a pro to do it lol.
tools i used:
Cheap ebay tint kit came with everything needed for the job.
heat gun
baby shampoo mixed in water in a spray bottle.

Just the rear window is fine :smiley: only my rear screen is done simply due to the bootlid being off my old car but i have left the side windows standard as they really dont need doing it does help when reversing towards sun and sets the back end off nicely heres few pics

I think you need to do the rear window in 2 or 3 horizontal sections and hide the joins along the demisting element lines this will help against creases in the corners .

Cheers for the reply's :) I do like the look better on a 3 door mind, but hopefully will get away with doing the rear and rear sides :)

this just makes me want to bang my head every time i hear it :cry:
no need to chop it mate! i do this several times a week and never once in my life have i had to chop it into sections! :)

How do you get it done in one with no creases,do you heat it or something

what percentage do you's go for? I was gunna go 20%, seems about right.

on a mk3 golf GTI (with the spoiler ofc) i would spray a light mist of water on the OUTSIDE of the window.. then stick the tin to the outside of the window and trim the bottom edge, using the glass in the window as a guide to run your knife round, must be an incredible sharp knife or else it may crease the tint..., then clean the inside of the window, with meths if available to get rid of all dust and static, then spray the window with water and a tiny drop of washing up liquid (not hand soap or any kind of skin cleaning products as it leaves a residue behind, hense why some people get ripples in their tint!)
then peel the backing paper off (if you struggle use 2 pieces of tape to grip each side while you peel them apart), then scrap it from the bottom upwards.. once you start to get to the top curve of the window then put a slight slit in the top corner, but leaving about 15mm away from the glass, then slowly scrape the tint at 450 to the rest of the window, if you see a crease forming follow the last procedure with the slit, if you leave the 15mm you will find that it should tear itsealf into place until it touches the window..
then leave it on the car for ATLEAST 1 hour on a warm day, or 2 hours on a cold one... then trim where required..
i will have to do a tutorial for the forum one day if enough people are interested?
some people find it easier doing it otherways, this i find the easiest method how ever...

in my younger days when i like tinted windows i used to only tint the rear side windows as if you have dark interior it makes the rear one look tinted anyway as the car goes dark inside. although that was very dark tint i used back then.

i've not tried it yet but apparently you lay the tint on the outside of the back window (wet)
and use a heat gun to shrink the fil to the curve of the window then transfer it to the inside. something like that lol

I always use fairy up liquid, I got a roll to play with and learn, ever since i have been able to tint pretty well, and im not usually good at this sort of thing, you will need a heat gun. knifes, squeegee and spray bottle, pretty much it. For the rear window make sure you buy a roll that is wider, or you will need to join it. which as said before can be done on a demister line so its not the end of the world. but for £8 odd, you can get 6m to play with and mess it up a few times.
