Title: Windscreen delaminating?
Post by: JoeGTI on 22 April 2012, 22:34
Hi folks,
I noticed yesterday while washing my GTD that the very base of my windscreen (under the drivers wiper) has got some white milky marks, about 2-3 mm high at most, down where it meets the plastic scuttle panel. It's obviously a case of moisture getting in between the glass and laminate. Looks a bit unsightly, but it is under the wipers, under the bonnet line so you'd really have to be looking for it. Annoying though!

My MKV GTI definitely had this issue too but I don't think it was as bad on that car (and my GTD is only 9 months old!).  I wonder has anyone else here had this? I'm not so sure it'll get any worse - it never worsened on my GTI.  I don't know if I'd want the dealers replacing the screen for fear they'd balls it up!

I googled and found this thread dating back to 2005! Mine isn't as bad as this...

Yes I've read about this fault on other forums De laminating windscreen??? (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?111169-De-laminating-windscreen) you can get it replaced under warranty.

Yeah, I'd seen that too. I take it no one else on here has ever noticed the problem?

To be honest I'm inclined to leave it (for another while at least)... Replacing an otherwise perfect screen could be more trouble than its worth. Has anyone here ever had a windscreen replaced? Is it a big job, involving trim removal, etc ?

easy job but needs to be done by pros no probs normally and just the interior mirror of wipers off and the scuttle remove screen then put it back together again

Popped over to the dealers there and the guy I spoke to had never seen it before but agreed it didn't look right! The car is otherwise immaculate so I find my eye constantly drawn to it now as I get into the car !

Anyway, he's going to contact VW and see what they say about getting it replaced.

All that being said, I wandered around the forecourt and I could see the same problem on lots of other VW's (not just Golfs) although most of them weren't as bad as mine and were mostly older cars.

I'm told if you ever have a windscreen replaced due to breakage they would fit a new light/rain sensor behind the mirror but they charge you extra as that part insn't covered on insurance with a normal windscreen replacement.

Obviously if they are changing your windscreen under warranty then thats VW's problem to absorb that cost.

He said as it would be a warranty job, it would be an OEM VW screen, which apparently has the light/rain sensor attached to it. I think non-OEM screens might need the sensor separately (or maybe they try transplanting the sensor from the old to the new one!).

Yep. Did a search on here and it's cropped up a few times. Anyway, it's getting replaced next week under warranty. Might as well get it done as it is a bit unsightly... And I've had an ongoing irritating problem with squeaking wipers since day one (changing the blades twice hasn't helped!), maybe the new screen will resolve that too!

They will be getting the local Autoglass place to do it, hope they don't cock up the install. It'll be an OEM VW screen anyway at least, dealer has ordered it in.

does anyone know how big a chip needs to be before they need to be repaired?

I've got one around passenger sun visor height and got another yesterday bang centre of the screen. not sure if its worth repairing? you can feel them with your finger nail but they're not really visible from more than a couple of feet

Go to AutoGlass.co.uk and follow their guide, IIRC if it fits in about £1 coin diameter then they can repair...... If you have windscreen cover on your policy then its either free to fix or no more than a tenner (In my case with Direct Line)
If it's free then do it

I've had a couple of screens replaced with the rain sensor (both on my Bora) and sensor was replaced no question both times with my in's policy coughing up

It used to be anything up to the diameter of a 5p, although i've had a few repairs done on my wirks van by different companies and they are crap tbh, someone like you and me that likes to keep their car spotless you won't be happy imo.

well the chips I'm on about are tiny. probably 1-2mm across if that but its the depth i wasn't sure about. they're not particularly deep but can be felt with a finger nail.

i had a chip on on screen a while back i was certain needed fixing but auto glass said it wad too small
