Title: 1.8t water temp gauge
Post by: Dan_GTi8v on 22 April 2012, 21:47
This may sound dumb but I've never been in a mk4 1.8t so don't know if they have a water temp gauge as standard, but I would like to fit one in my mk3 conversion which definitely doesn't have one. Is there a standard spot on the 1.8t that I can get a reading from or will I have to tap it from somewhere?

I know 42 draft do an adapter but thats 50 bucks + overseas postage, and I don't think I want one that badly

Cheers

they have same gauges as mk3 (obviously different clocks)

does yours not work on the MK3 clocks ?

isn't the one on the clocks the oil temp? sh!t im such a noob  my rad fan never comes on and as that gauge never goes over halfway I guessed it was oil temp

Oil temp is on the mfa display, gauge is water temp.

so if there is one as standard what is this adapter for?

is the mk3 gti rad bigger than the 1.8t rad? cant think of any other reason my fan wont come on, I know the wiring is good as its all been tested and I have a new ecs low temp thermostat and sensor

fan problem could be a problem with the fan switch on the radiator.

its all good if I bridge the pins on the rad temp sensor the fan comes on, no worries just thought if 42 draft sell the adapter there must not be one standard of something. bit confused what its for now though

If the temp doesn't go above half way then there is no reason for the fan to come on   :undecided:

Agreed, mine work all ok but it is very rare they come on unless I am running the air con.

This is why I thought there was a problem, when I had the mk3 engine in there it didn't go above halfway either but the fan would nearly always come on after getting home from a night shift (nice clear m25 ) but now with the new 1.8t it never does

also added to my concerns when I fitted the lower temp stuff and it still never came on

If all is normal though then I guess its ok

still wondering what the point of that 42 draft designs adapter is though :P

Depth Charge Gauge mate.. a great mod for the even lardy arsed Mk4

Dan.. your car is working fine by sounds of it, half way is normal!

U can test the fan by shorting out the connections on the plug to the fan

yeah I've tried that and it comes on fine was just worried as its not come on once since doing the conversion, even after a spirited 4 hour drive up and down the m3

I've been over everything many times but every now and then it gets me worried when I think it should be coming on. what got me on it this time is I'm gonna be fitting a boost gauge and so got me thinking about the temp gauge again
