I've got to drill out the top of my old strut to get it off as the nut has seized and the allen key hole has split, can i buy this nut seperately and what size is it or do i need to get a top mount kit?
-
You will need to get one from the dealers think it is 21mm as have just done mine.
Have you tried some plusgas penetrating fluid and an impact wrench as that may free it. If you've not got an impact wrench I would pop along to your local garage and bung them a fiver and they should do it for you.
-
I've got an impact socket (the type you hit with a big hammer) so i'll try that tommorow, otherwise just drill it out as i've got different struts to fit.
Cheers..
-
That was quick Mate....fitting them already. Fair play. As suggested I usually nip to the local tyre bay and they crack them off for a fiver and they will re tighten them for you. Miles easier than messing around and when they are cracked the job sjould only take an hour.
-
Done one side, other side has a seized top nut and the allen hole is split  so i'll try an impact socket on it or drill it out.
P.S, nice to meet you mate and thanks for bringing the shocks down, well worth the money..
-
Glad your happy with them. Does the one side look as low as you wanted ??
-
It's plenty low enough for me and its a great improvement to the look of the car, i'll get a Vr front splitter to finish it off.
Out of interest is it possible to drill the top of the strut and still save the nut or does all need to go?
-
Drilling will kill it but don't you have a spare as you should have the original two off motor and the spare one on the complete strut off me. Look forward to seeing some pics when fitted. Are you changing the rears as well ??
-
Yes! of course....i'm not thinking straight today, there is one on the complete strut.
I'll probably do the rears next weekend and put up some pictures then.
p.s, i need to drill out the upper strut nut, there is a lower strut nut on the one you gave me but i'll still need another upper one.
-
Cant remember fully but is the top nut not the same as the bottom nut ??
-
Yep your right, had to sit and figure that out in my head.. :embarassed:
-
Top nut should be a nylon thread and bottom is narrower with a flange, this is important so it sits on the top mount correctly, but any bolt with nylon or a bit of lock tight instead would be fine for the top one. An air gun will wizz it straight off if you know any one with one.

Go it sorted today, now looks much better..

I'll get the rears done next weekend and put a vr splitter on then take some pics and put them up...

Good Man......look forward to seeing the pics Mate and well done for fitting them so quick.
-
To be honest it was pretty straight forward apart from that top nut which took a bit of persuasion, only issue now is that the abs light is staying on but i suspect this is because i've disturbed the wiring on the hubs...
-
Pretty common problem.....I had this for a bit. I kept wiping the fault code which cleared the light but five minutes later the light would come on again. In the end it sorted itself out and the light went out. I did however reach around the wheel to check the connector was in properly (not an easy job for me as the car sits about an inch of the ground !!!!!).
-
Yeah, i'll see how it goes this week and have a look at the connectors if it doesn't go out, i had to use the widow maker jack to lift the front enough to get my trolley jack out so i would imagine you have some fun and games with yours and thanks again for the shocks, i'm trying to get my mk3 looking half decent on a budget and they have helped a lot.

To be continued...

I have a small wooden wedge I have to drive up to enable me to get the trolley jack under. Then when finished I have to put the wedge back under the wheel and remove the trolley jack and drop the car down. A lot of hassle but worth it for the looks and the handling.
Yours looks a good drop on the front
-
Looking good just the rears to go I take it. I do the same trick with the wood and have a trolley jack and two bits of 2x4 in the boot in case I get a puncture.
-
Yes, i'm very happy with it, i'll crack on with the rears at the weekend and as a bonus the abs light went out on its own

What with the crap roads and spirited driving my front top mounts now need replacing, is there any preference ie:Vr/poly etc.
