Im trying to figure out which engine mount is playing up on my GTI 8v. When you accelerate normally the engine rocks back, shaking the car. Is the front mount supposed to damp this action or is it the rear. There seems to be alot of movment from the front mount.
-
the rear is meant to take the brunt of the strain, if the rear goes then the front (which aint v.strong) will show signs of movement
-
i also have a brand spanking new rear mount & also a 6mth old front mount that will fit your car
there is nothing wrong with the front, it was meant to be faulty but turned out to be the rear mount
offers?!?!
-
The FRONT engine mount takes most the strain, thats why its usually the one that fails.
-
Get someone to rock the engine while you look for play in all the mounts. When they go , you will know about it!
-
HI - If you are still not sure, then snap nor was I, so I jacked up the engine via the gear box and slipped out the mounting which only took about half an hour and checked it out - yep it was buggered (am I allowed to say that) okay so I had to slip it back in til I get another but at least theres no more trying to figure out. It is more than likely that you would be able to tell if the mount is shot just by jacking the engine up and looking at the mount as you do so
cheers

just checking out what teletype does
-
the fronts are notoriously weak and they do go first, but its the rear that takes the brunt of the strain, when this goes then the front will fail within a matter of weeks!
-
Front is weak? i don't think it is , look at the size of them, the front just takes most of the strain.
-
fronts are nowhere near as strong as the rear's
-
I don't know where you get that from mate, the front definately takes most the strain. You are talking about mk2 gti?
-
yep im talkin about mk2 gti 16v,
so much so that they changed the std rear mount on the 16v after 89 to that of the hydro mount found on the G60
late 16v & G60 where the only ones to get the rear hydro mounts
-
Yep, the front still takes most strain though. I've seen one go, the engine literally was jumping out of the car!
-
Cheers for that. The engine definatly looks like it wants to jump out. Especially when you start it. I looked at the rear mount the other day it didnt look like the one in the Haynes manual. Did they put hydro rear mounts ones on the late 8v. Its a Feb 92

Get someone to drive it round a car park with the bonnet lifted while you look at the engine, you will soon see if any mounts are shot.
-
hydro only featured on late 16v's & G60's
instead of getting somebody to drive round a car park just lift the bonnet and then with the handbrake on, rock it in 1st & Rev, you'll be able to see any movment in the engine thru the gap under the bonnet
-
Thats pretty much what i meant, i didn't mean drive it literally, rev the engine on the clutch while slowly releasing it.
-
The front mount will take the most strain as your using a lateral force rather than a rotational force. so your amplifying the movement of the engine considerably.
My front mount was so bad that all the liquid had leaked out and it was just the metal plunger pushing up and down in an empty rubber void.
As you say leave it in gear with the handbrake on as you lift the clutch you'll see the engine tilt and or lift.
Also make sure you catch it in time as if its too bad you can crack your downpipe if the engine movement is that bad.

From Mr.VW himself :D
