Title: What to look for?
Post by: logeyboy on 20 April 2012, 10:13
Hi,

I'm going to look at a 2006 1.4s Golf with my girlfriend tomorrow (it's for her).
What should I be looking for on one of these fancy modern cars???

Check when the cambelt was last done. They were originally issued with plastic tensioners that shattered prematurely and the engines would eat themselves. If it's been done properly the tensioners should now be metal. As such I'd be cautious that the engine number matches that of the log book.

Water leaks and signs of ingress through the cabin is another issue, and that the E/W and C/L all work correctly too if it has it.

check that the engine is present. it can sometimes be replaced by a hamster on a running wheel.
