Title: Best/worst buys
Post by: bobbarley on 17 April 2012, 19:28
Technology wise, what's the best thing you've bought?  Perhaps something you got that you never thought you'd end up using as much as you do.  Likewise, what's the thing you've bought that was the biggest waste of money in the end?

Just technology?? iPhone is pretty sweet, but that's an obvious one as I knew I would use it all the time.

The biggest waste of money was the Nintendo Wii for her indoors. I've used it 3 times and that's more than she has.

Best? Xbox & Kinect, it's my multimedia centre now and streams all my movies from PC's and Laptop - it now has BBC iPlayer which works brilliantly with the Kinect.

2 of my Best :
Humax Freeview Recorder. So useful being able to record and pause TV and no subscription fees.
Digital SLR - I would carry it everywhere if I could.

My wife would say her iPad 2 and Kindle.

Best:
Panasonic TZ-10. Use it all the time to take pictures of my 7 month old son. Priceless.

Worst:
Rock Laptop (http://www.rockdirect.com/). It was meant to be a desktop replacement in a laptop but kept on overheating and crashing. After that I got a Mac and never looked back.
Canon DSLR and all the lenses and accessories. Used it for a few projects but was too bulky to use on a daily basis and ended up sitting in a wardrobe forgotten and gathering dust. Must have spent around £5k on all the bits and pieces (100-400L lens, 24-105L lens, 14mm Sigma prime, 90mm Tamron Macro, 50mm 1.8 prime, 550EX flash, 20D body, cable release, angle view finder, extra batteries, CF cards, ibm microdrives, loewpro backpack and shoulder bag, manfrotto tripod).

Seriously?
To spend that much on serious camera gear, you must have been really into it. Or was it just a hobby that you lost interest in?
I'm just getting more and more into photography as time goes on.
Did you sell all the kit then ?

i was really into it when i studied photography for a term when I did my btec national diploma in general art and design back in the early 90s. Back then it was film based. When dslr's came along I got the bug again. Then got married and had a baby and didn't have the time anymore.

Must be willing to let the 14mm sigma go for a reasonable price?

Best: My Synology NAS. Incredible piece of kit - Great hardware, reliable and the software on it is by far the best NAS software out there. Plus Synology keep updating it for all their products and adding amazing new features! Recently, an update improved the CPU efficiency by something like 22%!

Worst: Probably every blackberry, ever.

Best: Toss up between my Xbox and my most recently purchased MacBook Air. The Xbox because I'm never off it and the MacBook because it's lightyears ahead of any other computer I've ever tried (only because I find it really easy to use).

Worst: Ooh, don't know here. I've not had any spectacular failures... and I don't really not use anything I buy... perhaps my Samsung Galaxy, purely because I can't work a fiddly touchscreen and wish I could go back to the good old days of the Nokia 3310 (and Snake).

There's a theme of the wii being one of the worst buys on here. Funny as I remember when they first came out and nearing Xmas you couldn't get one for love nor money.

My Wii never gets any use now either, frankly the Kinect pisses on it. However, the missus does still like her Wii Fit board, and I've got my Guitar Hero for it :)

The Kinect is defo much better than the wii, the xbox has come a long way and imo, replaces all the other multimedia centre options I was looking at  I even looked at the Apple TV's, but refuse to have an iTunes account and no point with an xbox anyway.

Best = 5D mk II, Computer and stereo setup. By far the best has to be my iPod Classic 120gb and Shure SE530s, 3 1/2 years of faultless use and abuse.

Worst = iPod Touch 1G 8gb. Filled it up in a few minutes and never used it in the 10 months I owned it, couldn't handle not having all my music on the go.
