Yeah one is still good but the cracking I dont like in one of them!
I was thinking using the old Rallye top mounts off my old struts do you guys think it will be okay to use those of the Rallye I kept?
Those Rallye ones look stronger and no cracking on them I think they will fit? :undecided:
-
Replace them whilst you have the sus off anyhow jay
-
Yeah I've got no issues removing the top mount on the coilies I'm more worried about the Rallye ones, springs and fingers dont mix with me.
-
What made you check them?was there a noise or any problems?
-
I've never driven the car yet!
Its still being restored.
I dropped out the suspension to fix the brakes and clean them up.
You just can't tell with top mounts until you see them, plus I didnt like the play on them and the fact it had been lowered so low for many years it was going to have issues.
Just becuase the car was so low the whole suspension including wishbones and bushes are finished.
I've ordered about £300 of parts just to fix these problems!
-
For what they cost you would be wise to replace them.
-
So why wouldnt you do the cracked top mounts if your restoring it? Also, how are you working with the springs? Are you using compressors of just been ghetto? Just remember jay, dont put your finger where you wouldn't put your todger.

The top mounts are loose on the rallye ones so just need to take off the locking nut and the other bolts bellow should hold the spring in place without loosing my fingers? :undecided:

Get some Golf3 GTI mounts in there. Grab a whole set up off a scrapper, that way you'll know how they assemble, too.
One of the things it's worth robbing off a Golf3.

I would have DH and did along time ago, but I was thinking the Rallye ones are solid and new so just saving where I can mate!
Underlay carpet is another fav I steal off them better than the MK2 moldy ones you usually find
-
you guys seem to really know your stuff,I have a low rumble noise and slight knocking from the front left could it be the same as your showng the shock mount cracked or worn?
-
Low rumble does it get louder when you drive faster?
If it does it might be ball joint or wheel bearings?
Top mounts are more noticable going over pot holes and rough roads where the spring keeps hitting the top.
Problems with top mounts its only noticable if weights on them, but the ball joints and wheel bearings you can check with just spinning the wheel and listening.
Ball joints wiggle and see if there is play in them (they will move small amounts but not enough to feel like a space or metal hitting metal)
-
sounds more like top mounts bearings were checked short while ago, also on full lock reversing sometimes here a big boing noise and your right pot holes do make it sound worse
-
How do you actually change the top mounts? I'm new to all of this
Is it in the Haynes manual?
Thanks

Need two tools and big balls :lipsrsealed:
slotted nut removal tool 10.5mm usually
(http://www.s2-audi.co.uk/tech_articles/tools/vw524.jpg)
Compression Spring clamps
(http://www.simsestools.co.uk/images/spring%20comps%203.jpg)
-
O really
:lipsrsealed:
-
Many moons ago I saw a lad same age I was 18 loose two fingers right in front of me!
I don't do springs and mounts anymore after that even though with the right tools I might give it ago!
FK it I would rather pay for someone to change them for me its a phobia
-
Yep, they can be killers. i seem some  sights,
I got the clamps, and will happily whip springs off.
I owned 3 corsas and my daughters had one, spring changes were common :lipsrsealed:
-
Its wierd Chuff coilovers I have no problem with wound up tight and secure but stock springs it scares me mate never got over the finger accident! :lipsrsealed:
Ebay got spring compressors and slotted sockets all the tools I've never wanted to own :embarassed:
-
having worked on wheels tyres and suspension units on

for a decade plus, I can do mk2 golf units easily enough
-
Bloody hell no wonder a MK2 is a breeze for you
-
The very first day I started work (Piss off Chuff) a mechanic had removed a coil spring from a Renault, and put it in the boot of the car for whatever reason. The spring was still very much under full compression! while in the boot, the spring snapped, and tore a hole straight through the rear 1/4 panel, flew across the workshop out of the building via a reinforced glass window, never to be seen again! Over the years have seen countless incidents, usually with poorly designed kit that slips.. we now have a floor mounted hydraulic compressor, that seems to do the job safely.
Thom
-
You inspire me to not do the mounts Thom
I've seen people use air guns to wind off the nuts insane they use the car wheel to stop the kick back :lipsrsealed:
The only other way I've seen a cocked job was jacking the whole hub up then undo the nut that was dangerous not the jack end the top mount end :lipsrsealed:
-
This made me run, I was 17 and my mate was helping me put coilovers on my van. He said he had used compressors before so I left him to it and it ended up like this....

guessing he didnt torque both sides up evenly
I'm going to a mate he has a hydrolic compressor and he said we will sort it out in ten minutes for ya!
Only problem is the dam slotted nut which is called a threaded bush nut or threaded sleeve insert
Both VAG part numbers match size and pitch (M14 x1.5 pitch)
811412965 = 5.50 plus VAT EACH :shocked:
305412365A = 74P back order EACH :lipsrsealed:
Anyone know the difference between the two prices?

When I took the chopped springs off my car I didn't even need the compressors. They were under no load as soon as the car was jacked up.
