driving to work this morning i heard 1 hell of a bang . i got to work only to find oil pouring out of the box.
i managed to get my boss to let me have a ramp for a hour & below is what i found
1st 2nd & 4th gears nearly striped of teeth
3rd gear in 20 bits floating in what remained of the oil
diff bearings so hot you couldnt touch them after 2 hours
moral of this story is even though i work in a scrapyard & had just put this box in after my other 1 decided it didnt want 2 live anymore is if you do buy a second hand box try & find out as much as you can. i took the word of a guy i work with that the box was good 4 days later it blows up. my boss as just spent £600 on a new box 4 mine & ive got the new mk 5 golf as a hire car while i wait for my new box to arrive

Sounds like the rivets gave up, common fault on 020 boxes! You can get a bolt kit from VW, but its a bit late for your box ;)
