Title: Air filter / induction kit question
Post by: Wayne on 14 April 2012, 21:24
Quick question, is this set up any good with keeping the bottom section of the air box.

Also would a foam / dry filter be better so as not to knacker the MAF.

(I know btw this a BAM engine)

I'm running an 80mm Jetex filter with a reducer for the 70mm MAF. To stop heatsoak I bought this from eBay: 140738085256

It sounds awesome, it also feels like the turbo spools sooner.

Thanks for the quick reply, I have saved the ebay item.

All the Seat Cupra lads seem to love the Jetex filters. Bill at Badger5 does pretty good deals on them which is probably why. I know prawn on Audi-Sport got about another 12g/s MAF flow with one fitted so they should see some gains IMO.

One more quick question, what did you do with the SAI pipe which fits on the airbox

run a cold air feed from the front grill into the airbox

Get a little breather filter to go in the end of the pipe I bought a 25mm and it didnt fit so its duct taped on atm. Ive got an 18mm one on order which should fit. People get too hung up with the whole panel filter thing to me. R-Tech wouldn't make an induction kit with the pipercross foam cone style filter and aluminium shield if there wasn't gains to be had. A dyno will never simulate under bonnet temperatures you get on the road.

I've put on a Pipercross Venom a few days ago and very very impressed with the kit, not had chance to log the peak g/s yet but throttle response feels much better compared to std airbox and less lag.

Had a good 2 hour drive today (an hour of that stuck in road works) and the filter housing was still cold afterwards, MPG has increased slightly and holding 17-18psi before was just about seeing 16psi with smoothed airbox, additional 3" air feed from lower bumper and a K&N panel filter.

Used to have a big Jetex cone on a while back with an air feed and while it sounded awesome there was defiantly a noticeable hesitation before the turbo kicked in. Did some logging and got same peak g/s figures of 186.96 with the Jetex and a CAI with Apexi filter on an hour before but felt better with the CAI on.

5th air filter setup this is now and providing peak figures are decent and can cope with the planned K04-001 will not be changing anytime soon.

The shorter the induction tubing, the better / quicker the throttle response, but when I had my filter direct on the MAF it didnt seem as good at higher speeds (probably not getting the airflow needed)

Have since just run a mish mash of tubing to behind the passenger headlight and is good at low and high speeds

TBH, its only worth going for an enclosed kit, anything else is vulnrable to heat soak...

Always wanted the cone but never purchase as I keep hearing various reports....lag no lag...heat soak etc etc  :undecided:

i had a ram air cone filter cai kit and on the rollers it suffered very bad from heat soak hence why i removed it probably would of been ok if it had a heat shield of some sort and extra cold air feed to it

There's heatshield available on eBay.

The quality isn't brilliant, but they fit OK and do the job.

I feel my car pulls much better with my Jetex cone than it did with my smoothed airbox and pipercross filter. A fan on a dyno will not equal 70mph worth of air passing through the grill

I have managed to get some cold air ducting as well which will / should help.

wayne?

your selling though?

Well it looks like that is never going to happen and no way on this earth I am selling it for £1500, so going to try a few more mods, have some more fun for a few more months and then maybe look at selling it then or keep it.

I know this would be ideal on a NA car, but as well know the air gets heated up insainly by the turbo straight after? then cooled by the intercooler before it reaches the inlet manifold. what i just did was fit a powergasket made by neuspeed which is a performance gasket for the inlet manifold and not the crappy standard one which creates heatsoak . the powergasket lowers inlet temps along with a decent FMIC surely that is what will make the difference?

so is there any point cooling the air a couple of degrees before it gets heated up by the turbo?

buy some 2.5" tubing and decat.
SAI delete
N249 bypass
Charcoal canister delete
Catch can vented to atmosphere

Some of those ideas have got me thinking
