Do you have wind noise in your car? Not that sort of wind!
I get wind noise from the top of the drivers door. The other door is silent. The rest of the car is silent. Its a quiet car.
I pick up a friend from the airport. They said 'have you got your window open' when I was going about 70ish mph. I then spent the rest of the journey trying to find where it was coming from. I'm still not sure as it seems to come from somewhere and everywhere around the top of the window/door.
The dealer checked the door, drove me around the block said it looks OK. They fiddled with the door and tightend it a bit but it is still there. If it was an older car you expect this sort of thing. Its a silly niggle but a frustrating one on a new car.....
Any advice?

YES! And it's still not fixed!

I find this disgusting from a car that a) costs far more than the average hatch back b) is meant to be premium and c) is based on a chassis that's been out since ~2005
VW have managed to adjust mine so that the noise only appears above 80mph on the drivers side, but 90mph on the passenger side is disgustingly loud.
This one issue is genuinely enough to put me off buying another Golf.

Agreed! Thanks for that, I thought it was just me. I love my new car but this is really starting to bug me!
-
I have, only on drivers door, anything above 60mph. Seems to be coming from the top left. I'll put up with it until the 1st service but as said previously it should not happen on a car of this type.
-
I had it on my last mk6 the dealer made a minor adjustment to the passenger door and it was cured. Have a look at both doors as one maybe sitting slightly proud. 5 min job.
-
Mine is going into the dealership in a weeks time so I'll make them aware of the wind noise, high pitched water pump...again... and suspected wastegate rattle.
Unfortunately I really am beginning to get fed up of this car already  and I can already see a replacement engine/rejected car in the future

My cars in the dealers for service and first mot, my good friend works at the dealers and this is an issue I brought up with him and he says that this is aknown concern and there is a tpi out for this, he's done the repair and he tells me that the noise is away, result. If only they could set coming home lights to auto like my old ed30

Could you ask him for the TPI number please and a basic outline of the problem & fix?
It should be possible to enable coming home lights, if you don't have auto lights & wipers they might come on every time you unlock the car though, day or night, not really a problem though :)
-
Will do, but wont be until thursday i'm afraid. Will let you know as soon as. I have auto lights and wipers but have to flash headlight to get coming home lights to work, I want it so they come on when either take out key or open the door. If anyone here knows coding let me know please.

Thanks, would be much appreciated.
If it's in for first MOT then I guess it is coming up to 3 years old (2009).... I'll have a look and let you know if I can find anything
-
Ive got mine booked in a couple of weeks to have it looked at. The TPI number and outline of th fix would be very useful! Ta
-
glad to see i'm not going mad as have this noise (oddly around 40mph) on the top of the drivers side door so will be useful to know what the TPI

These VW's aren't all they're cracked up to be at all! :embarassed:

My brother commented that there was wind noise coming from the drivers door when he was driving my car. I told him I had never noiced it. I still don't. However, he is a lot taller than me. So maybe I should get him to check it again :undecided:
Though I doubt if he could hear anything over the noise from the OEM tyres  I can't even hear my fiancee talking. Which is a mixed blessing. :lipsrsealed: "You're not listening to me!", "Eh? Speak up!" I guess this is what it will be like in 20-30 years anyway. :embarassed:

Oh yeah I'm 27...

I was thinking 20-30 years, that's very optimistic, 5 at most lol

Hi Gents,
Any update on this and the TPI number/details?
Thanks

Mine been in the dealers because of this problem and they fitted a new 'window surround seal' as the mechanic found this was 'twisted' in the factory. Had a underpower polo for a couple of days while they looked into the problem and glad to have my lovely GTD back! The garage is in Crystal Palace, London and they seem on the ball.... However, due to their location there is no way of getting above 40mph within 10 miles to test its fixed tonight. So, I'm going to take it out on a motorway tomorrow and see if this new seal solves the wind noise. I'll let you know......

Sad times when the only time you can get up to speed is on the motorway. No lovely A roads to play around on!!! Hope it's sorted. Mine was fixed the other day, seems ok now. They found the TPI altho I didn't get the number, forgot, sorry guys
-
I also have wind noise. Comes from the top of the driver's door around 70 mph. Its a bit annoying :undecided:
-
I get a "whistle" from the driver's door/ B pillar area at motorway speeds.
-
Guys get your cars into VW, as mentioned previously there is a TPI for wind noise and a known fix.
-
Yep, the new seal stops the wind noise/whistle. So much better. Now to find some lovely A roads over the weekend....

Yes I had wind noise from my doors, we tried to bend the doors a little, but no luck.
I removed the seals and put them on again but not so hard as to reduce the gap, but no luck.
I fitted some extra soundproofing in the inner door frame between the door and car to try to catch the noise, but no luck.
In the end I replaced the entire door and door frame with a BMW door and frame and that has fixed the problem. Strange it has also got rid of the stupid amount of road noise and tyre roar, given my more power, better handling, better mpg and the stereo sounds way better.

Got to love those BMW Germans

Ha!
I have same wind noise "feature" on the front driver and passenger doors...the noise (sounds as if window partially opened) kicks in at 60mph so I have lived with it until its first service which was today..it is annoying..
Dealer says its normal for this car and said they took out another one which also had the same issue...
i advised them of the things to check and there should be a TPI in for this but they cannot find anything..
just done a bunch of research on it and will have found a TSB 2023699 off a US forum, might be same for UK? plus using some silicone grease, krytox, B pillar padding?, window surround seal and door alignment to check
i won't let it go for a car that costs this much!!
does anyone know what the TPI number is? it has been mentioned in a few posts and think this could solve it once and for all..

Hi All,
Just wondered if anybody got VW Service Modification number for door seals to cure wind noise. When I first got my GTI the wind noise would start at around 65mph, I got the front passenger door adjusted - and now starts at motorway speeds. The noise seems to depend on wind direction - as if I'm driving with a crosswind on passenger side - a whistling noise starts around the front passenger side door.
Regards,
-
yep sounds exactly like mine, it definitely kicks in at 60+ and gets progressively worse!
wind direction does also have an impact, its worse ont he passenger side
hopefully someone will come up trumps with a number that can be cross-referenced otherwise it might be a long drawn out affair with my dealer...
-
Must admit I forgot yesterday as they were going through so much stuff to do with my car. Tried calling earlier but couldn't get through. I will try again next week
-
So is this a 3 door issue?
Mines very quiet.

So is this a 3 door issue?
Mines very quiet.
Taff_09 says that his 5dr is the same. Both my MK6's have not suffered nice and quiet and much better than the MK5 I had.
-
mine is a 5 Door so most prob one of the unlucky ones..
-
My car is a late 2009 model with 5 doors. The annoying thing is that as it seems to depend on the wind direction relative to the car, I can turn a corner and the noise goes away, so far it seem the front passenger door is only door affected. I did search other forums and it seems the left hand front door is affected more, perhaps that's just the threads I came across.
It's very annoying as I've been in a Seat Leon FR and it's not got this annoying problem. It just spoils a nice car.
Adjusting the door helped, I could've had the door adjusted in more, but it looked stupid if it wasn't flush with pillar. So it seems the door seals aren't thick enough or rigid enough.
Cheers,
-
Guys, checked with my dealership who said there is NO TPI. They've been told about one a few times, and even contacted VW UK, who contacted Germany and they supplied a German TPI but that fix didn't work. The wind noise on my car was resolved by adjusting the seals, but they admitted this doesn't work in every case and they've had a MK6 come in several times and it's still not fixed.
-
Scott, I have noticed you had an a3 before your golf! This won't help with the noise problems of the golf, they are light years ahead when it comes to sound insulation.
When I swapped to my r32 from my a3 the first thing I noticed was the road noise from the front arches was silly. (although the superb engine noise took my attention away)

I found my A3 much quieter than the Golf
but I think it was partly down to the tyres and I had insulated the doors. The Bridgestone's on the GTI are noisey as hell! I was running coilovers, ARBs etc on the A3 too so it's difficult to remember it standard. RIP A3, it was stolen last week from the new owners house and hasn't been seen since!

No issues with my 3 door either.
-
cheers Scott for looking into this, i had my hopes up! never mind..
will be going back to dealer but i dont think they are that bothered about sorting this!
we have 2010 A3 3 dr and the windows are silent!
my 5dr tdi 130 is also silent!
