Finally got my car back together yesterday with the help of Modulator, cheers geezer. New headgasket as the one in it was a sh!t pattern one that was starting to go on no1 cylinder. I will get some pics sent to Rich to upload soon. A little tip for everyone, if your headgasket is not flush on the head ie. it sticks out a bit then it is not a vw headgasket, be warned! something else to look out for when buying a car!
-
Aren't you concerned that your car has got through at least two headgaskets ?
-
Not really mate, the other one was only slighty going, it was pressurising the coolant system. The old gasket was a poor quality pattern one, so i have used genuine parts. The point is do the job properly and it won't need doing again!

I think it was more the case of the original gasket went a year or so before you bought the car and the owner then fitted a pattern gasket rather than an original one.
Also the early VR6 headgaskets were known to have problems and VW updated the 95 and on ones to prevent it. You car was a switch over year model as it has the square side repeaters so got a dodgy gasket from new.
From seeing it and helping do the job I am sure the job is now fixed and you wont have anymore problems with it.
Is the engine still smoking like a kipper from all the new coatings burning off?
