Scott - Same in GTD land mate.  However, I like the sound the generator makes.  To quote from a recent review....

"GTD has a sporty sound – has not traditionally been a particular strength of diesel engines. However, the GTD’s new common rail engine is different. Since it no longer has a superimposed “hammering” sound that was previously typical of diesels, engineers were able to fine tune its acoustics for the first time. This is accomplished by a special sound generator, which outputs a sonorous tone, especially in the lower engine speed range. The electromagnetic sound generator evaluates engine speed, momentary power demand and vehicle speed data obtained via the car’s CAN bus and tunes the engine sound that can be heard in the interior."

The GTD sounds great inside the car until you open the window

This isn't that new, although the electronic side of it makes it a bit gay.

The Focus ST has a device called a "symposer", which is plumbed directly into the inlet pipe just prior to the throttle body. It transmits the "5 cylinder growl" into the cabin via a plastic pipe that runs over the rocker cover to just behind the bulkhead. It's disgusting just now much it works! I blocked mine off as it was leaking boost and the noise inside the cabin was so dull - it was pure exhaust pops and bangs that could be heard - I actually missed the standard car because the growl made it sound so much noisier!

The difference is, of course, that the symposer in the Ford is just an amplification of what's actually happening under the bonnet. Electronic noises are not cool!!

Apparently so - I wondered how the engine sounded so loud and the exhaust so quiet!

On my 2009 GTI it sounded quite pronounced, yet on my 2011 GTI it is hardly noticeable. Wonder if you can mess with it on VCDS?

Jim

If it looks like the thing pictured on the US sites...mine does NOT have it. I've just been and checked.

I'm sure it's a US only thing.

This is the physical pipe thingy...nothing to say there isn't a 'speaker' somewhere.

My59 plate GTI had the induction pipe and my ED35 has the speaker. Induction pipe sounded better at lower revs and speaker better over 4000 rpm. Wish I could modify it to just work over 4000.

The ED35 has it too and may be the R but not sure about that. The Polo 6R GTI has it and the ED35 at low revs sounds the same. I have had both ED30 and MK6 GTI and they both sound different to the ED35.

Do you have a picture of it on the ED35?

Sorry no pics from an ED35 that I could find online and I don't want to take mine apart. Loads of stuff on TinterWeb, but I guess you have already looked.
