Title: Pads/ TyrolSport - Brake caliper stiffening kit/ Thicker rear ARB
Post by: ScottA on 12 April 2012, 22:42
Hi all,

Really not a fan of the standard brakes, they bite quite well initially but if you need to break hard or suddenly, they can be quite scary! I used to have the S3/R 345mm's on my previous car and they were excellent in comparison. However, I would like to avoid spending lots of money on a Golf R setup or Porsche kit, so I'm looking at some better (than OEM) pads - if anyone has any recommendations. The pads I have now are almost new (1800 miles on em) so would like some which would provide a noticeable improvement for fast road driving. I've also been looking at the TyrolSport - Brake caliper stiffening kit http://www.tyrolsport.com/index.php?p=product&id=124&parent=739 it seems to have lots of good reviews which say it totally changes the feel of the brakes, but does anyone on here have any first hand experience of the kit?

Finally, I'd like a stiffer rear ARB but I would ideally like to keep it OEM. I'm looking into whether something such as the Sharan has a thicker ARB that would fit. Again, if anyone has experienced of a thicker ARB, OEM or not, I'd like to know.

Cheers,
Scott

These pads are supposed to be great.

Thanks. Yeah I've heard good stuff about them too. I just wonder whether it's worth replacing OEM pads - will there be that much difference, considering the OEM pads are almost new  :undecided:

From what I've heard is that the pads do improve the cr@p feel and performance of the OEM brakes, I'm like you it's the only things that I'm really disappointed with on my GTI.

Pads are a lot cheaper than buying a BBK, it's the route I will take first and if that doesn't make an improvement then BBK it will have to be.

I would say it's definitely worth reading up on the TyrolSport kit. I'm hoping that and better pads will make a huge difference. I'm really not happy with how the car feels at the moment. For example, under really heavy braking, the back end feels very twitchy. It's on Volkswagen Racing springs but I remember it being the same before these were fitted. My A3 used to feel planted, even under very heavy braking, but that had S3 brakes all round, Weitec coilovers, Eibach ARB's, WALK etc. The GTI really doesn't inspire confidence (imo)

i've had the ferodo ds2500 along with WALK for 2 weeks now and they are definitely a big improvement.

I am getting steering vibrations at 90+mph tho, does anyone know why? could it have something todo with the pads?

i looked into the tyrolsport kit but only UK supplier i can find ar awesome and its about £100

you also need to take the bushes out every few thousand miles to re grease it and clean it or they stick

I'm going to try new pads as i HATE the standard brakes

brake assist level 2 setting on VCDS makes a big improvement but they still fade which IMO you should never get on the road in a modern hot hatch.

my clio 197 brakes could take any sh!t i threw at them and just got better the more you stood on them but these GTI brakes are really poor

Aren't Cupra calipers just the same as the R, S3, R32 etc?

Yes but there red
I remember SEAT testing the brembos on the mk2 and having heat soke issues, were as the S3,R brakes at the time out performed them in most of there tests. Made interesting reading at the time.

the R/R32.S3 brakes are very heavy though which is a downside but they're pretty easy to get hold of but like snoopy says they're not red

Yeah, good point about them already being red mate.

I had S3 brakes on my A3 but as mentioned they're really heavy. I'd probably go with the NQS BBK

Yeah the Posche ones done by that guy (Dave in think) on the MK5 GTI website look superb.
