I,ve got an 8v mk2 golf gti with full service history. Why then was I totally out accelarated by a standard mk4 golf gti when my acceleration is supposed to be faster on paper? The car has not been serviced for 2 years but is in excellent conditon otherwise.

Probably because the mk4 wasn't a standard one, it was probably just badged that way !
-
was it a NA Gti or a turbo version??
not all Mk4 GTi's have the red I to signify its a turbo, u can now choose whether to have it, or just the plain silver GTI on the back, or none at all!!

I was wondering if my GTi has maybe lost power over the years (it's done 134,000 + miles) cause it's still supposed to hit 60 mph in 8.3 seconds. Even the mk4 GTi turbo only manages it in 8.5 secs.

mk4 turbo does it in 7.4 or something like that

VW turbos (petrol) come with both 150 BHP and 180 BHP engines these days. The 150's figure is 8.5 and the 180 is 7.9.
Whatever the figures my 150 feels a lot faster than my old mk3 8v. Still that's not the comparison you are making.... Optimax makes it even faster.

The mk2 8v should be a tiny bit quicker 0-60 than the standard 150bhp 1.8T. The car that raced you was probably a 180bhp 1.8T which someone has also chipped :D
