You need fully synthetic for the 1.8t mate.
Best bet is quantum platinum 5w40
Part number - ZGB 115 qlB 005 11
Can get 10l on eBay for £50 posted iirc

in the last 10 years i must've done over 200,000 miles in mk4's of various levels of tune using a 10w40 semi synth and never had issues. But then i am rather OCD about doing oil changes every 5k. :lipsrsealed:

10w40 semi is good too. As long as you change it regular there isnt an issue. Just donk get 20w50 mineral sh!te.

oh i never make recommendations when it comes to oil, too many forum "experts" have their own strong opinions on the matter  i will simply say that both 1.8Ts i've owned in the past were fed on 10w40. Both were highly tuned (and spent many many hours on various dynos) and I never had any oil related problems with either of them.

I use 5w30 (to vw spec) fully syn and mines done 165k......and gets done every 6000 (then again it's a passat with the useless size sump!)

and halfraud's got magnetec at £17.50 for 4 ltr at the mo (it says for vauxhall but meets vw 501.00 spec)

go for 10/40 part :) cheaper aswell. change it every 5,6 k and you'll never have an issue, also you might wana replace your oil pick up pipe out of peice of mind cost me 9.40 from vw, there  common for blocking up so might aswell replace it :)

I would still go for the 5w40 Vw fully synth. It's Vw approved and it's only 25 for 5L where as nowadays you can only buy 4L bottles of aftermarket stuff

Cheaper the. All the aftermarket stuff too so I don't see any reason not to use it.

Quick question to save starting another thread, mine was done last May and I have done just under 3000 miles since, should I replace it again in May or would it be ok to leave it a little longer.

I am meticulous about service intervals and change my oil every 6 months or 5k miles which ever comes first. The inside of my engine was immaculate when I stripped it down - even the inside of the block was a nice healthy colour with no build up
