I am looking for a nice 3dr mk5 for £8-10,000. I originally wanted the R32 with DSG but have realised that the fuel usage and tax band are just crazy!
I like the look of the ED30 as it comes with the higher spec than the GTI and i would be happy to drive that as is where as the GTI might need a bit of modding / colour coding to get it how i want it.
What are peoples thoughts on these cars and which one would be the best alrounder and what are the main common faults with any of them?
Thanks
Michael

IMHO:
R32: Beautiful vehicle, beautiful V6 engine, with 4 wheel drive when required. Road tax very expensive.
ED30: Has KO4 turbo and other engine improvements, pushes 230bhp stock. Styling touches as you mention. 'Higher spec' you mention - depends on what the original buyer ordered - xenons etc., same as a GTI.
GTI: Lovely car and some people feel that a remapped GTI betters an ED30, possibly due to a little more lag with the KO4.
I'd say you're looking at a GTI or ED30, a nice dilemma. I've seen a few horrible ED30's BTW - ragged/crashed so be careful!
Common faults-do a search.
Good luck with your quest!
-
cheers for the input, i really like the R32 but dont think i can justify the tax and im sure that loving the sound would mean very thirsty on fuel, lol! would love the 4 wheel drive though.
I know what you mean about the ED 30 and Gti's, i suppose a nice, top spec'd gti would match the ED 30 and would probably be cheaper to buy. Not sure what the difference in insurance is etc yet as im still deciding

I think in today's climate the R32 is even more of an "enthusiast only" car than it was before. The V6 engine sounds sublime and the raw NA power makes it rewarding to drive but the fuel and tax are less than comforting. Granted the tax only comes around once a year but the fuel costs can only really be considered acceptable if the car is a weekend only (or for low mileage use).
For an every day better compromise go for a GTI. Personally I prefer the subtle looks of the standard GTI to the Edition 30, but the Edition 30 offers much more tuning potential and the interior is definitely better. If however you prefer the looks of the Edition 30 then I'd suggest that it's really a no-brainer as to what car you should be considering.
As for DSG, it's personal preference. I have it and I love it but that's just my own experience/preference.

I bought my gti about 6 weeks ago and love it so much but the R32 is one of my favourite ever cars but chose the gti due to the running costs of the R32, now however I'm thinking of trading the gti in and getting the R32 as I love them that much regardless of the cost, having said that I have never driven the R32 so will need to have a good test drive in one first as I have never enjoyed driving a car more than I do my gti. I have done so many searches on here to try and make up my mind but just don't no what to do so I no what predicament your in mate
-
i find that the gti/ed30 are just not quick enough in std guise... so you really need to factor in a remap into yout insurance costs, which can push them sky high.
if you can justify the fuel costs, I would get the R32... its really that simple
-
I no I could afford the fuel it's the tax that puts me off a little, but it's only once a year, also how much faster is the gti mapped compared to a standard R32?

very little in it... until you come to some bends. then its bye bye gti
However the R32 is much quicker to drive 'quickly', and no turbo lag.

Went from a mk5 GTI to an ED 30 & was a good move.
-
I am going to be in the same boat in the next 2-3 months. I just love r32's for the noise, 4wd etc, and they are getting cheaper all the time, then on the other hand I want a ED30 (both DSG). Is the fuel between the two going to be that different??
I do 75% motorway driving to work and back so wouldnt get too much abuse, it would mostly be on acceleration to 70 then cruise control all the way!
-
Ed30 would be my choice, R32 is awesome but fuel costs keep going up and up.
-
I am also having the same debate with myself between the two cars. I currently have a 2008 Polo GTI 9n3 and am looking to change in the summer.
I cannot make my mind up between a ED30 or an R32. The only considerable factor in it is the fuel cost in my mind.
I know that a remap on the R32 will only give it 5 - 10BHP but can a remap also give it better fuel efficiency if your at lower revs and just want to be kind and loving to it?

+1
Nice talking to you mate :afro:
-
Had 2 mk5 gti's, driven a couple R32's, found an edition 30, love it, and won't change it for love no money... Find a good eddy, and keep hold of it.
-
Been discussing on R32OC forums and I think they have persuaded me :p
-
Well how ever much i would love an R32 i do not think i can justify the fuel and tax costs. I am now thinking of adding a gt tdi 170bhp to the mix with the GTI and Ed30.
So if anyone has any thoughts, opinions and experiences that would be great.
On another note would it be wrong to mod an ED30?
-
everyone mods their ed30... they are too slow without being modded :lipsrsealed:

*Fapfapfapfap* Gah and i don't have the money to buy for 3-4 weeks :(

Looks like a cracker! Get on the blower to the seller - if it's not gone (ad is a few days old) go see it!

They made ed30's from nov 06 ? And I own a 56 plate eddy? That's incorrect
-
Well i thought was only from 08 my bad, it says in the adverty Edition 30 spec and i see no Edition 30 badge so i assumed, i don't want to go ringing anyone until i have the money ready to go, plus in the 3-4 weeks between now and then that perfect car might come along.
Out of interest does anyone know of a company that does ED30 bodykits seat replacements and the like ?

VW

Have you driven the eddy vs the standard GTi yet?
Ed30 every time. I couldnt ever justify the weekly upkeep on an R32

Try Vortex.

Just saw an ED30 locally with a US front bumper, DO WANT
-
i know what you are saying jeynesey but the Ed30 is quite a lot more expensive to buy to start with.
What are the big differences then? I know the eddys are more powerful and looks wise but isnt the suspension etc the same for handling etc?
-
More power, Bigger turbo, different wheels, different front splitter, rear bumper, cosmetic changes inside including the beautiful seats
Its much more tunable than the gti due to the Ko4.
Wish I still had mine

Right, first of all I would say the R32 is straight out the window unless you're literally rolling in cash. Yes they are very fast and sound amazing and have a really strong engine but the road tax is £445 or something, MPG is terrible due to the thirsty 3.2 V6 and they really aren't a car for today with the price of fuel soaring, I think it's something you would regret. The Edition 30 isn't that far behind the R32 for much more reasonable running costs. The running costs on the Edition 30 are also close to the standard GTI anyway.
If it was me, I would go for the GTI Edition 30 hands down, in red! It's the best performance/running costs ratio. Looks amazing, sounds amazing, drives amazing. What more could you need.

Edition 30 has a bigger turbo (K04 - Amazing ), more BHP, can get close to if not exceed 300BHP if tuned. Cosmetic differences are bigger front splitter and very nice red stiched leather seats and steering wheel which look amazing, 18" wheels instead of 17", if you can get the black monza's on the red Edition 30 they are  Smoked rear headlight glass like the R32, the GTI might have these too i'm not actually sure! Oh and a little discreet Edition 30 badge on the back of your car to make you look cool. Oh and as you asked about the suspension, the Edition 30 is lowered so it will just do everything better basically.
You will most definitely feel the difference between the 2. Is around a second quicker in the 0-60MPH sprint too.
Go for the Edition 30!
-
Any of them. They are all quite nippy and practical. The haldex system makes the R32 a good boy racer town car. The ed30 looks somewhat chubby but can be made to go a bit faster. The GTI is a good all rounder, cheaper too.
